glasgow cathedral

while i thought this was a "nice" image of a well known and beautiful building, i wanted to do something to make it that bit different. so after turning the whole image into mono, using channel mixer i then used the history brush to bring back the colour to the trees and sky. added a vignette and bobs yer uncle.... or is he?.......... what does everyone think?

Re: glasgow cathedral

It is certainly a really good shot of the cathedral, and you hace given it a different slant, but I can't make up my mind if it works. I'm thinking that the vignetting would maybe be more effective if there were no trees to 'soak up' the effect, which makes it a little unbalanced for me.

Or am I on a different world?

Re: glasgow cathedral

Might be as Graham suggests, too much around and about but I fear that Robert's not my uncle, on this occasion! The cathedral's taken on a rather artificuial 'cut-out' look.

Re: glasgow cathedral

The shot is fine, nicely composed and so forth. i just can't see the point in taking the colour out and then putting it all back again except for the building which probably had less colour than the rest anyway! I think it has given the cathedral a rather austere feel which might be what you intended but in that case I think the whole shot in mono with high contrast and fairly dark would have done it better. I definitely don't like the vignetting, way too heavy.

Although you say 'a famous building' I have to say it is probably only famous to people in Glasgow or at least to Scotland. If I am honest, i wouldn't have know that was Glasgow Cathedral if you hadn't told me.

Have you still got the original, I'd like to see it made mono just as is.

Cheers,
Rob

Re: glasgow cathedral

Hi Fi

Too many trees, not enough cathedral and I certainly don't like the vignetting.

Re: glasgow cathedral

What stands out to me is there is too much contrast between the roof of the cathedral and the vignetting. I'm afraid it doesn't work for me.
