These are stunning! Have they all been photoshopped or are some from the camera direct? I am rubbish with understanding photoshop/pixelmator and all my shots with filter have come out just red, although i managed to get one looking interesting!

Re: Infrared Thread.

There is some post processing - this bit of the thread shows mine. Bear in mind my camera is an enhanced colour IR filter. But you should get similar with a standard 72 IR filter.

The most important part of shooting digital IR is to set a proper custom WB. See my reply to your other post.

In Photoshop CS5 - It's image - adjustments - channel mixer.

On Red channel - move the Red to 0% and Blue to 100%
On Blue channel - move the Blue to 0% and Red to 100%

Below is my image out of camera...as you can see it's orangey.

I normally then do and auto levels...which gives me this on my setup.

The channel switch ("Blue sky effect is this") - from the autolevel on. I've also used Simpbow's selective colour tip he posted elsewhere on here in this one.

This next one is a straight B&W conversion - again after auto levels.

Lastly a "Film Effect version" to give the blurred effect you get with film...(Diffuse Glow - Filter ->Distort -> Diffuse Glow. (Graininess 5, Glow 3, Clear 12).

These I have mostly "actioned" now.

That's about the limit of my "learnt" adjustments so far. Any new ones ?

Re: Infrared Thread.

Yo

I've been playing with IR for a little while but I happened upon this thread, can you (or simpbow!) explain or point me toward more detail regards 'selective color' as I'm not familiar with that, it is a setting in photoshop?

I have a few IR pics to share (just editing some new ones today!) for now here's a couple from earlier this year

Hi

Love the coloured one - nice pinks and blues.

What's the problem with Selective Colour ? Can you not find the tool ?

Ok - Post here if you have problems with it.

The tool is under

Image -> Adjustments -> Selective Colour

Liking those car shots particuarly the last bonnet up one on your website. They certainly make a good subject and some impressive Jap cars there.

Thanks Silver

I am using a 17-40mm L Lens in the most of them. The flower shot was my 100mm Macro lens. And yes it is a Canon 20D - IR filter (colour enhanced IR).

Re: Infrared Thread.

both lenses seem to work really well (+ the skill of the photographer of course!) I'm using a 17-55is on a 600d for IR and need to try other lenses (have a 17-40l but not tried it yet!)

I love the dreamy softness of the last image,. doesn't shout 'IR' at all, the 3rd shot I love the composition / subject and colour palette, thing I'm not sure on is the blacks seem to come through in the image a bit too much for me and perhaps with a little less contrast would be interesting to see

Re: Infrared Thread.

I like all of them, I use the 17-40mm on my 20D SB like this and the 100mm macro like this, two very good lenses. The last one is my fav as the deep blur pulls me in. I can see from all the pictures you have posted over the past few months the improvements you have made in color composition. I want to ask if you have ever used curves in a color channel such as in #1 to experment on the pinkish red or any IR for that matter ? At onetime I used Lab mode and the curves style there, but the normal RGB mode curves will work about as good.

Re: Infrared Thread.

Hi Boofers

Thanks for the comment. I have not tried curves yet in a colour channel. That 1st one was just a Hue/Saturation adjustment. I will have to give that a go.

I'll have to give it a go. I've also noticed in CS6 that the levels are much better. I like the presets there to. I've also of course played around in topaz adjust which is where #3 gets some of its effect from.

Re: Infrared Thread.

#3 makes me want to get out and find some new pictures. The black I can see why when it is used this way and in the IR invirement would at first take someone back. I like it because it is in the tree most of all and adds to a move to the 3D side of 2D and less so in the texture in the forground were it is just right for me. Beauitful grassy and weedy textures,,,it is after all another lightzone.

Re: Infrared Thread.

Hi Silver

Missed your comment. I will have to drag out the image and put a softer one up for the 3rd. I only have 4 lenses the 17-40, two macro lens and a 130-400. I tell a lie i have a bad 35-110 kit somewhere too!

I liked the effect of it and the high contrast is what that topaz effect gave the image and i liked. A lot of IR is I think like boofers (i think ) to create a second glance from the observer of the image as they look into another world so to speak.

Beautiful set Chris Like all of them. I just find the colours you achieve with IR so unbelievable and with the texture of these subjects it's like another world ... a form of escapism I suppose. Every time I see the pinks rendered like this I always think of candy-floss .

Re: Infrared Thread.

Hi Silver, I cqan finally see your pictures, very nice. I find that I miss the color of the cars and careful location of surrounding objects seems to be the only way to over come this unless you paint up.

Chrisa, I do like the lighter one,,,"here I go again", I would have used a mask to balance the blacks to a tad lighter in the house and trees and enhance the texture in the weedy grass. I hope you take this all in as a shared view. Have to admit that it has some good looking parts to it this way.

I am so glad that some of the pictures on the site have started to show up for me,,

Cheers Boofers - Interesting approach - another I must try. Please keep the feedback and suggestions coming. I went in my original image for a grittier detailed look, as when processing a batch I went for different effects on them as I went through. Are you still having trouble with my other images btw ?

Re: Infrared Thread.

Thanks Boofers, I think you are right about missing the cars colours though and I think most of the car owners likely share that viewpoint

Chris, I do prefer the flatter image (I'm sure there are plenty who like it the other way), I didn't know you had used topaz (until you said!) and that is probably the thing which I noticed, it feels the blacks are a bit blotchy across the first image, though having said that the trees in the first one being more contrasty help balance the building out - can't win!

Re: Infrared Thread.

Chris, I suspect you know but just for general info,. to fiddle around with the colours one way (there are very many) is to use photoshop and pick the hue-saturation control,. select yellows (and if you wish you can use the dropper to control which yellows exactly) then play with the hue slider - you can loose a lot of time tweaking trying to decide what looks best
