Re: Infrared Thread.

Love the bridge,,,but out side of I am going nuts I just can't tell you how much fun it is to see your camera in action. No I won't buy one, at least I think I won't. Try making cat tails white, they are my favorite and first white object that looked great white. A few minutes later I was using the same lens and came up with a big ole hot spot. Really am liking the yellow in the water.

Re: Infrared Thread.

Good to have another IR'r on board. Look forward to seeing some more. I noticed you had a few in the Gallery. Some good stuff there - some really nice glow in the foliage etc.

Are you using some tooling to set the WB, use the grass or do you set it another way ?

Re: Infrared Thread.

Hi, Thanks... I spent around two years trying all sorts to get the perfect whites in the shots... but sometimes you can get blown out by the whites...

To set up my camera i have used many methods...

to set my white balance on the camera i tried using a green card... no that great, so i used a white card and got better results.

In camera raw I set the WB using to plunger tool to pick an area of near white.

using channel swap in photoshop then auto contrast and auto tone and auto colour as a saved action...

The best bit was was using Nik software Colour Efex Pro 3 or 4 and navigate to the bottom where you see white Neutraliser and use the plunger tool to select a very pale blue ie: grass and not sky....

you can then go back in to Colour Efex and use the Graduated Natural Density option to place contrast back in to the photo.

I prefer to use ND filters while taking the shot, but where i cant... i'll use photoshop later on to add it.

I have been experimenting with Nik Efex HDR Pro 1 or 2 Software and adding a bit of punch back in... but only slight... otherwise it can look horrible..

Re: Infrared Thread.

My camera is converted - at equivalent to 665nm Filter ( Enhanced IR).

I've been experimenting with shooting sunlit grass, grey cars ( yes motors!) and white / grey trousers for various WB's. I think I must try using a white/grey card this year and see. I experiment with various colours. I've not used ND's and interesting to know they have an effect even on IR.

Had similar action in PS - must try the auto contrast and see what that does. I convert my RAWs in batch using Canon DPP due to ACR not working with IR. Might have to try the plunger trick out on the better shots.

Like the idea of HDR - something I've not attempted with IR. Have Nik so must try it out sometime this year.

Re: Infrared Thread.

I could not resist trying that auto contrast out. Made a nice difference on some shots I don't normally attempt in IR or normally. (People).

This is my Dad over the Xmas period. The contrast made a fair difference. I've also applied a slight diffuse glow to try to mimic IR film.

Re: Infrared Thread.

Hi, Hope you don't mind... i looked at one of your photos and wanted to try processing it to see if it made any difference... The original had a green tone / tinge to it...

Before and after with sun flare gone.

I use ND filters to stop whites being blown out during exposure...

The photo of your Dad... you could use Silver Efex to reduce bright areas and add contrast if you are wanting that sort of thing...

Re: Infrared Thread.

No I don't mind at all. Nice conversion. I assume you just cloned out the flare - something that I think has really helped and I did not think of. I have some ND's so when I go out in the sun with it again will try them out.

I had put the green tinge in by a Hue change to one of the channels. Sometimes I make it pink.

Good point on the Silver Efex - will try that later.

Re: Infrared Thread.

Adee, I used to use a .06 ND, real light and it improved the contrast. When I added more ND I burned the whites and stopped after awhile, but the light six seemed to work. I am thinking now I used aperture priority and thats why it burned the whites. I now use manual at will and must try an ND and speed up the exposure so it won't burn. I hope you follow me on this, it seems that I was using my ND in the wrong way.
I have another question. Your camera have the CMOS sensor or the one before nikon made the change?

Re: Infrared Thread.

Hi, it's got a CMOS sensor - Sensor size APS-C.

I found that in difficult times.. i used a tripod and a ND 6 - 8, set it to P mode and used the compensation dial until i got the correct exposure, then used Manual mode to try pushing the limits..

Infrared really does not have a rule book as such, it's a case of trial and commonly error....lol

I started with a D70 and IR Filter.... Having to use long speeds did my box in... but i learn't a lot from it...

I found that taking the picture and using the camera was the easy bit... Processing on the other hand...

Re: Infrared Thread.

Like that last one Adee.

I agree IR is all about experimentation, and playing with adding colour etc is one of them.

I've used the HUE/Satuaration adjustment to add / change colours, and also used plugins that do odd things with colour - like these two with Topaz Adjust and an extreme adjustment. I suspect the Nik Colour Effects may do something similar.

Re: Infrared Thread.

I had a good rummage around my hard drive today... for some images i did months ago... with the same sort of intention as you ... ie: adding a a tint or tone to it.

I have since gone off the idea as the image became to noisy with grain... etc... this was one of my failed attempts...

I now stick to something more natural in colour.
