Need advice

I've not done a show before and would like your input on how I should arrange my images on the wall. I have roughly a 9 foot long by 5 foot high space to work with.

Here is how I have laid them out on my carpet at home and would like to see what you think.
Questions:
Is the arrangement pleasing?
Are there images that should or should not be positioned next to each other?
Are the colors of side by side images important to consider?
Any other suggestions or changes?
The small gray rectangle on the lower left represents the Artist's bio placard.
Thanks
Paul

Re: Need advice

First impressions are that there are three pictures of maple leaves.

I think they should either somehow be together, perhaps the two lower ones on either side of the top one, or only display one.

Maybe if the top one became the centre one in the middle row with the other two on each side?

My gut feeling is to only have one in the display, but without seeing an alternative order, it is difficult.

See what others think.

Re: Need advice

It may work better if the top and bottom rows were swapped. The large frames at the top and the smaller ones at the bottom make it look top heavy to me.

Is that small unframed thing some sort of narrative If so I am not sure it should be in the middle of the display

On the other hand I could be totally wrong as I have never done this myself.

Re: Need advice

I would arrange them so the outermost images make the eye follow on to the centre where I would place the most dominant picture. For instance the second from the right in the middle row I would put in the bottom right hand corner, the bridge I would put in the bottom centre and the bottom left picture is fine where it is.

Just as an after thought do people who read from right to left prefer images that flow that way?

Re: Need advice

I took what a few of you said and rearranged the images.
So, is this an improvement?

Re: Need advice

Not saying I'm right or wrong because people have different ideas but I would swap the two outer leaves around so the stalks then pointed towards the middle instead of away from it and I would move the photo of the jetty to the middle bottom, again to draw the eye to the centre. It's a very strong image and is tending to draw my eye to the lefthand side and out of the display.

Re: Need advice

I'd move the green one at bottom RH corner to the middle column on the same (bottom) row, so that you had green/fern images running down the centre. I'd put the brownish one which is currently next to it, in its place (i.e. to the bottom RH corner).

I'd group the doorway/bench one (currently in bottom row, centre column) with the jetty one, i.e. maybe move it to the top LH corner ... but where you'd put the pink one that's currently there, I don't know This is a bit like solving a Rubik's Cube

Just goes to show we are all different - I like the outer leaves pointing in to the centre one!

I assume that you will have them spaced out a bit more on the wall? you mention 9'x 5' They are looking a bit cluttered/too close at the moment.

I think the second arrangement suffers because the frame sizes are randomly distributed. However, there might be some that think this is better that a more uniform appearance. Of the two, I think the first is more harmonious, but could be more so if your bio placard was in the centre of the bottom row. Maybe this is more about the frame sizes rather than the subject of each picture.

I guess you have to decide if there is more impact to your show if the display is uniform/harmonious or irregular.

Graham raises a very good point here ... it would be much easier to arrange them, and the whole display would look more professional, if they were all in the same sized frame. The smaller sized images would have to have a correspondingly larger matting than the larger pic's.

Agree with AQ: larger frames at the bottom to prevent it looking top heavy

Re: Need advice

well i know nOTING about displaying images... but going between the two examples i have to say the top one works better for me as its more structured and ordered, the bottom one looks like it has just been put together with no thought for the sizes etc.

Re: Need advice

One drawback of having the larger ones at the bottom is that the top (and smaller) ones might be too high to appreciate properly.

Taking it to extremes, if you had some 20x16 prints and some 10x8's, it would not make sense to put the larger ones at eye level or below, and the small ones further from the viewer.

Re: Need advice

The prints being in almost straight lines (parallel if I could spell it) is not attractive at all.
I would prefer a random(ish) spread so as not to lead the eye on a logical progression.
