nice touch bachs, i love to see mono pictures with a dash of colour in the right place.
I also feel we MUST have a section on PS, PSP or any other program 'hint and tips' section.

Nice shot Bachs, the selective colour works well in this situation i think, the only problem i have with the image is that it seems to be overly sharpened. Otherwise, nice shot

Possibly a little less mono? - just a hint of colour in the bike and surroundings would make it less artificial looking - great shot though.

Jonny...yes it is a little oversharpened in retrospect.

Arkady...I wrestled with this one...full colour it was bland, full monochrome it was a little lost.

The sign cried out to me to be left in colour. I did think about colourizing the reg plate but as always there's a danger of overdoing selective colour and it's sometimes difficult to draw the line.

I had already decided on the method at the time of the shot and stuck by my guns.

I deliberately deleted the .psd file before I changed my mind.

Marianne..it was -7c at lunchtime.
I don't think I could ever wear a kilt!

It's still sitting there too, although the frosts gone. Funny thing is apparently it's been there for a week, maybe more. Until you posted I hadn't noticed it, and I go past it twice a day

i know what you mean about this section, but its not just pure help, it is interspersed (is that a word) with other titbits and assorted posts.
i like what Bachs has done with his picture, but he dosen't say how to do it, i know its selective colour, but how to achieve that is beyond me, thats the sort of help i am talking about.

It's beyond me too...I was on my third generous dash of Jim Beam (I'm way past that now)

The technique was very simple, I opened the image and did some basic routine tweaking on it then duplicated the layer.
I converted the duplicate layer using my long winded monochrome conversion method then added a layer mask to the duplicate layer. (the icon to create that is at the bottom of the layers pallette).
I don't have PS open at the moment but just hover over the icons until you see the tooltip 'layer mask'
That will create a white rectangle to the right of your image thumbnail in your duplicate layer.
Click on this white rectangle to select it.

With the foreground colour set to black and using various sized brushes, I zoomed right in and painted into the layer mask to reveal the colour in the original background layer.

Finally I flattened the layers using 'Layers/Merge Visible' so there was only one layer.

Then I had another glass of Jim Beam.

The problem with writing complete 'How to's' for editing is it can become very involved and needs often to be interspersed with screesnhots of PS or PSP to mean anything to a complete newcomer, so it can be a major undertaking. Then we use terms like Mask and Layer which often don't mean a thing to the newcomer either.

I think once you've got a good grasp of what a Mask is (Called a Selection in PSP) then you're well on the way to being able to tackle most things.

I can do that over the next couple of days (when the Jim Beam wears off)
I can see CT's point.
Tutorials like this need to be written with newcomers in mind as the terms may not mean anything.

With some careful screengrabs and explanations, I think I could accomplish that on a relatively simple subject like this.

I'll post it in it's own thread and if the powers that be like it they can maybe lift it across to the tutorials section.

Tell you what, I'll do a basic explanation of what masks and layers are all about complete with some screenshots and practical hands on things which can be done using them. I think it would be of more use to get people off to a good understanding of what masks and layers are. It will be based on Paint Shop Pro but it will be just as applicable to Photoshop.

Don't rush me for it though.

LOL. It makes sense to cover some basic terms first. Give me a week I'll get it done before if I can.

I finally got round to watching some of the video tutorial disks I've got here this afternoon. One of them showed how to use Layer masks and I've got to say it's going to make life a lot easier. Used it with that mist shot and it helped get an effect I would never have managed otherwise.

I must have been using PSP since the original version, how long is that 20 years? and I'm still finding new ways to do things. I do remember sitting there though thinking " What the Hell is a mask?" so I can understand the problems for newcomers.
