Sigma 18-200 DC f3.5-6.3 example shots

These shots are not award winning, breath taking examples of photographic art. They are intended to show what can be achieved in lees than ideal conditions with a, let's face it - a cheap lens. The last one is a 100% crop. All were taken with my trusty Nikon D70s. All hand held and the two indicated were hand held but with me bracing myself against a window frame.

The first three were taken at about 8-8.30pm in June, on a very dim and overcast evening.

All shots at 200mm.

#1 - ISO 500 - 1/100 - f6.3

#2 - ISO 800 - 1/40 - f8 (hand held but braced)

#4 - ISO 800 - 1/30 - f8 (hand held but braced)

The next two were taken at around the same time on another evening, but this time lit by the last rays of the Sun before sunset.

#5 - ISO 200 - 1/125 f8

#6 ISO 200 - 1/100 f8

5.30pm on a much nicer day with good light

#6 ISO 200 1/200 f10 (matrix metered)

#7 ISO 200 - 1/640 - f10 (same time/place as #6, but metered from the car and then this detail enlarged to the same size as the uncropped #6)

Re: Sigma 18-200 DC f3.5-6.3 example shots

Here are some real-life shots taken once again in very overcast conditions with light rain thrown in too. This time in the middle of the day.

Unlike the previous post, there has been some processing. I took the first with -1 exposure comp to stop the white feathers from blowing, and as it was raining, packed away quickly. When I saw the Heron under the bridge, I got the camera out very quickly due to the rain and no cover, and forgot to reset the EV to 0. Consequently, a half stop lift, some fill light as the bird was standing under the bridge, and small contrast tweak in Lightroom. In CS3, a little levels and sharpening work. Nothing excessive and probably typical of what you would do in these circumstances. I think I recovered the -1 exposure comp that was dialled into the camera.

All taken with my D70s.

#1 - 1/320, f6.3, Exposure comp -1, ISO 200, 116mm

#2 - 1/200, f6.3, Exposure comp -1, ISO 200, 200mm

#3 - 1/250, f6.3, Exposure comp -1, ISO 200, 200mm

#4 - 1/200, f6.3, Exposure comp -1, ISO 200, 200mm

While I was there, several fish were caught, but this was the only one I captured.

What a rubbish lens, I'd have expected to be able to read those car number plates quite clearly!

One question. Do you experience annoying bokeh from this lens? I read that the bokeh produced by this lens isn't ideal...

Cheers,

Harry

Re: Sigma 18-200 DC f3.5-6.3 example shots

I only got this lens to use with my D70s body for a lightweight/holiday kit for when I don't want to carry my full 'A' kit around, so I have not really tried to get any of these sort of shots.

You could probably get better results than that shown in the example in the review in a different situation. I think the example they have used is exactly the situation where this lens would give the worst results, but 200mm and a aperture of f6.3 is never going to compete with 200mm @ f2.8

This is about the closest I've got to what you are talking about - 95mm @ f5.6 - but still nowhere near the performance of f2.8. however, it is in a different situation to the one in the review and is, I think, better.

In my review of this lens I wrote

Quote:
I would recommend this lens for those with realistic expectations of what it is capable of.
If good bokeh is important, this lens is not for you.
