General Guidelines for Comments
General Guidelines for Comments
Comments are meant to help you and others improve your work. However, those posting comments should keep in mind that this site attracts people of all abilities, and it can be daunting for a newcomer to offer up their work. Simple expressions of approval or dislike along with an explanatory comment are enough to tell a photographer why you think a photograph is good or where it could be improved. When offering comments, please be candid, critical, constructive, and friendly. When reading comments on your images, (and replies to your posts), remember that because web discussions lack facial expressions, body language and nuances of voice, the emotion and attitude you read from a message is often a reflection of your own feelings, and are not necessarily what the poster meant. Make sure you have read anything you are responding to carefully, as a robust response might be generated, based on mis-understandings. A negative comment is not a putdown. Critical comments are meant to help you improve your work. If you're willing to make comments, please post a few of your own images for everyone to see. Good posts of your own will give weight to your opinions. For those posting images, please describe your images – tell us what you wanted to express in the photo, what goal you were trying to achieve, what you particularly like about the result, what you feel may be missing or flawed, special efforts you made, or any other information that may help the viewer to understand your work. Please give as much technical detail as possible, such as focal length of the lens, aperture and shutter speed setting, film type and speed or ISO setting if shot on digital, time of day, weather, season, lighting conditions, difficulties of composition, camera on tripod or hand-held, and any other relevant information. Data on make and model of camera, lens or tripod can help viewers in their own choice of equipment. Feel free to ask any questions you need the answers to. Critique Forum This forum is intended to give members in depth, considered detailed critique and advice. This is why we restrict the numbers of new images that can be posted. A critique is not a putdown. Critical comments are meant to help you improve your work. Those posting critiques should keep this in mind; simple expressions of approval or dislike aren't enough to tell a photographer why you think a photo is good or bad. If you're willing to make comments, please post a few of your own images for us to see. Good posts of your own will give weight to your opinions. When offering critiques or comments, please be candid, critical, constructive, and friendly. When reading them, remember that because web discussions lack facial expressions, body language and nuances of voice, the emotion and attitude you read from a message is often a reflection of your own feelings, and are not necessarily what the poster meant.
