Canon EF 17-85 mm IS Lens ISM

I am interested in adding this to my lens range for use with my Canon 40D
Prices I have found vary between £439 - £240
eg Amazon £439
London Camera Exchange unboxed split from Kit £315
Camera Box
Camerabox - Online Customer Service £240

Obviously I am interested in getting the best price but I am a little wary of the price differential
Has any one purchased from Camera Box?
Any advice would be appreciated
Thank you

Since you are asking for advice on the suppliers rather than the lens, I have moved the thread to the correct section

The price looks suspiciously low. Are the goods coming direct from Europe and are all the relevant taxes paid? Are their customers satisfied. They must be doing something to keep their prices so low.

Thank you for your reply
This was my concern.

I have received the lens.
Other than coming in a plain box it appears to be satisfactory.
No instruction booklet butcopies of these are available from EOS for £2.25
It has a serial number and I am trying to get this checked out.
I have used it and the images do not show anything unusaul.

Camerabox does not appear To have any adverse comments registered
I will keep you posted

Plain Box probably means it has been separated only from a Camera body bundle kit price.

Also it may have formed a cash back original from Canon that has expired.

I would think there is nothing to worry about.
Just check out the warranty ,lens serial number with Canon Uk at Boreham Wood ,Herts. for piece of mind.

Should it go wrong you don't want to find out after spending £15 returning it to Canon Uk that its not warranty covered.

Re: Canon EF 17-85 mm IS Lens ISM

The 40D I received today came in a "40D + 17-85 kit" box. I phoned Purdy's to query this and they said there's a dire shortage of 'body-only' 40D packages from Canon right now, so they are splitting the kit packs. That means there will be plenty of orphaned 17-85 (and maybe 18-55) lenses that will have to be sold in plain boxes, but are probably perfectly OK.

EDIT - A J Purdy's website is showing the 17-85 at £229 "unboxed from kits".

Thank you Brian and Silkstone for your replies
There was no warranty card and I tried to check out the serial mumber with Canon but I was advised that they do not keep a record of lens serial numbers which I find hard to believe.
Mine from CameraBox was also priced at £229
The above have reassured me

Re: Canon EF 17-85 mm IS Lens ISM

You keep the serial number in case it ever gets lost/stolen and later turns up at the police or some insurance company. IF you can prove the goods are yours through a serial number then you at least have a legitimate claim of original ownership
