Re: Jessops high pricing
Not much of it is very good though Soup, I have rarely seen them pricing competitively. Yes, they say they do a price match but that just means 'Do your homework and you'll find this stuff a lot cheaper so if you tell us we'll reluctantly match it. If you're less savvy and don't mention it, we won't either and will take your cash very happily!'
To cap that off, they will often say no to a price match if they don't want to despite falling all the criteria they state themselves. I have had two refusals to match a UK seller who had the items in stock. This was not internet from Hong Kong stuff, just a large company selling with a regular advert in most of the big monthly photography magazines but on both occasions Jessops shrugged their shoulders and said 'Head office said no, sorry!' They then tried to convince me that it would take ages to arrive and if anything went wrong I'd have to send it back and be without it for 'goodness knows how long'. I phoned and they sent it next day delivery. On both occasions the item was in my hands in 24 hours and both have given sterling service ever since :o) Sorry but Jessops really don't do themselves any favours and are losing sales from serous enthusiasts hand over fist. I like giving them the chance to gain a sale off me but haven't bought anything of significant value for 3 years now. I even have £30 of vouchers still stuck in my wallet that I can't find anything worth spending on. Twenty quid and their anyone's ![]() Cheers, Rob

Re: Jessops high pricing
Are there any brick and mortar stores that are cheaper than jessops?
Jessops in hedge end matched and in fact beat anyone I could find in the UK for D300 prices. |

Re: Jessops high pricing
Park Cameras are a 'bricks and mortar store' in London and they are usually well below Jessops prices. A couple of examples:
Nikon 300D Jessops: - Mega Bank holiday price slashed: £999 Park Cameras: not just for bank holiday: £985 Canon 40D body only Jessops: 639.99 Park cameras: 599.99 As I often pop up to London, it's no big deal to pop in when I am there. If not, Park's delivery is very low and guaranteed next day delivery. I do agree with the general point that not places that have shops in the UK will be a lot cheaper than jessops, but then how many photography shops are there nowadays in our town centres? I know there are still some of the very small independent shops though these are a dying breed as they just can't compete. Jessops is probably the only national chain of stores in the UK anyway apart from multi-purpose shops like Dixons who I wouldn't dream of buying a camera from unless they did a very special deal (wouldn't hold my breath on that one!) but in all honesty I think more and more people are realising that buying from HK and other parts of the world and getting extremely good deals is not a bad thing. After all, send a camera back to a shop you bought it from in the UK and you probably won't get it back any sooner than sending it to HK. The only time I have had to send a faulty item back to HK, I had a brand new replacement in my hand less than 5 days after sending it off. The last time I sent a camera in for a minor repair in a UK shop, I was without it for nearly a month and that was for a repair that didn't need any new parts! I keep going in jessops hoping they'll have something I can spend my £30 of vouchers on but they are still taking up residence in my wallet right now. I need some batteries for my wife's camera, guess that'll get rid of some of them ![]() Cheers, Rob |

Re: Jessops high pricing
Jessops don't seem to be doing very well in the press, you would think that they would be keen to have more competitive prices. Having said that, 90% of the compact camera market must be people who see a snazzy camera and buy it on the high street without looking around for the best price (like many of us would).
Also i guess some people still like to purchase from a store where they can return a product easily if anything goes wrong. ![]() |

Re: Jessops high pricing
My local Jessops store missed the boat with respect to my recent insurance claim; their quote for the replacement kit came out £440 more expensive than getting the same gear from Calumet in Glasgow
Examples Sandisk Extreme III 4GB Jessops Price: £69.99 ea Calumet Price: £39.99 ea - saving £30 Lowepro Slingshot 200 bag Jessops Price: £89.99 Calumet Price: £58.99 - saving £31 Nikon D3 + 24-70mm lens Jessops Price: £4049.98 Calumet Price: £3899 - saving £150.98 Nikon D3 + 14-24mm lens Jessops Price: £4198.99 Calumet Price: £3999 - saving £199.99 Given this was an insurance claim, Jessops might argue against the need to price match. I'd still say that they lost out on £8K's worth of sales, whichever way you slice it - simply because they're overpriced in key areas. |

Re: Jessops high pricing
I think this must be a branch dependant thing.
Park: D300 £985 Jessops (Hedge End): D300 £920 |

Re: Jessops high pricing
Jessops Kingston this Monday: Ricoh GX 100 about 279.99 Probably
![]() Went in there to try one in the flesh as I am busy talking myself into buying one. Couldn't see any but luckily Lulu was there (I am a man so obviously would not ask for help) then.... [Mode=One foot in the Grave]. She was told "I think we have some out the back" After an embarrasing silent pause "Can I see one"? Sigh .. "The Panasonic is just as good" Eventually we managed to persuade her to show us one but were told we couldn't try it with our own memory card because of the "Data Protection Act." Finally as the first line suggests We then asked how much and were told "I think it's about £279 but you'll find out at the till" I am sure you are astonished to find out I never made it as far as the till.
