Anyone recommend a camera shop that has a good selection of second hand........possibly looking for a Canon 1D.

Not in your area, but heard OK things about them: T4 Cameras for all your photographic needs with shops in swindon, witney, newbury, devizes, chippenham and cirencester from traditional to digital photography

eBay? Know it's a risk, especially secondhand cameras, and think it's gone more expensive (more a sellers market now) but maybe worth a look

Watched a mint 1D sell on ebay last night £680.

Trying to think of shops reasonably near you. Would recommend the Bradford Camera Exchange (no website) and also Dale Photographic in Leeds. I can recommend both of them. Can't see a D1 on Dale though.
