Some heavy metal

Some shots from this year's 'tankfest' at Bovington ( )

A Scorpion coming to a rapid 'hand brake' stop

Challenger II

T34/85

Pzkfw VI Tiger 131 (the only running Tiger in the world)

I've cheated slightly on the last two as I've cloned some background out. I didn't think some modern fencing and a Mr Whippy van added to the scenes

Ahhh, Bovington (nostalgic tear - spent a couple of years there!). Those tanks are well looked after - where's the clouds of smoke from the burning oil?

Have a definite soft spot for the Scorpion - especially as my brother managed to drive one of his into the River Rhine (he did manage to get it out which probably saved him from the old heave-ho!)

Cheers chaps

The BA guys were giving the modern day stuff some serious welly round the new demo track. The Titan bridgelayer driver in particular must have thought he was Lewis Hamilton.

For anyone sad enough () the rest of my 08 set is here

they are class to watch them babies. I'll never forget seeing a whole tribe of them heading along a motorway past us a few years back. The noise and power was incredible

Re: Some heavy metal

I still remember as a kid being taken to the tank museum every year, as part of annual Weymouth hols

Used to love climbing over the "tortoise" (still the heaviest tank built ??) plus the WW1 Tank Mark nn tanks

I think the Tiger had shot gun cartridges fitted which you can see in the plume of smoke in one of the shots.

Oops! Think I only went the once all the years we were there!

Chatting to my dad about the pics and he switched into nostalgia mode. One of the things he was telling me was of a Tiger that was still in it's final resting place when he was posted to Germany post-war. Despite the 24 Shermans it took out, it only succumbed to Typhoon rockets that knocked it's turret off. One of the tactics the allies used was to apply half a dozen Shermans simultaneously against a Tiger - despite the shells bouncing off the Tiger, the crew inside could be knocked deaf/crazy/senseless as each hit made the turret ring like a very, very loud bell!

As he said, a modern Challenger II may be £1.5m but the Shermans were working out at a "massive" £25k - set against a Spitfire costing £5k you can see what he meant!

Re: Some heavy metal

Great pieces of heavy gear, mind years ago getting a chance to drive a Chieftain tank around the barracks under great super vision of course. nice set of shots.

Re: Some heavy metal

We visited the tank show in Oct 07, and it was fantastic, a really good day out.

On leaving the car park, we drove through the main site with a Challenger 2 tank in front of us. (in reverse with the turret facing us). Now that was a scary sight !!!
