How to remove Digital Haze

This is a fast, easy but important tutorial.
Its designed to remove the white film or fog like film in the Images, use this before you do anything to your image and you will notice the difference right away.
I turned it into an action since I use it on all my images.

In Photoshop
Go to Filter/Sharpen/Unsharp Mask

Just use the settings below

Hope it helps.

Re: Remove Film / Defog

Thanks sotelo.

It's perhaps worth mentioning that setting USM to a large radius like this acts as a form of local contrast enhancement. It's similar to the Clarify filter in PSP and makes the image 'pop' without increasing the overall contrast and losing shadow or highlight detail. It works with the unsharp mask filter in any image editor, and you can alter the intensity of the effect with the Radius and Amount sliders - but be careful about going below a radius of about 15 or you may get sharpening artifacts.

Re: Remove Film / Defog

hi there
this is a great tip, thanks to the poster. Its really helping some images that I took on a v hazy day, and at the time, kicked myself for not having a polarizing filter.
I;m curious about what the pixel radius means and actually does - i have noticed on some images of faces close up that I have used the unsharp mask tool on, that it gets v grainy (though appearing sharper). How does one know what levels to apply to the threshold and the radius?
thanks!

Glad it helped you, also here is a brief explanation of how it works:

The Radius determines how many pixels will be sharpened around defined edges, basically what it does is make light colors lighter and dark color darker. If you set the radius too high it will give you halos around your edges.

Amount determines how light the lighter pixels get, and how dark the darker pixels get.

Threshold will define the color rages that constitute the edge pixels, A low threshold will create more edge pixels. Setting the threshold low will make noise stand out.

This is what I recommend you use as starting point.
All purpose sharpening: amount=85, radius=1, threshold=4
For the web: amount=400, radius=0.3, threshold=0

always play with the settings, every image is different.

hope this brief explanation helps.

Re: How to remove Digital Haze

Thanks - I sort of get it, but, not being instinctively technical, much of the digi world of photography/video is a stretch for me to understand (but a stretch worth making)

Re: How to remove Digital Haze

I was just looking through the tutorials section and while this is an older post one thing to bare in mind is "there is no such thing as digital haze" - a decent lens (really most modern lenses) used correctly should not really have an issue with 'haze',

one of the reasons for lack of contrast is failing to use a lens hood - it is amazing how much difference it makes
