Improving contrast in the GIMP

I thought I would do a tutorial using the GIMP as I know some pixalo'ers dont have photoshop yet or do use the GIMP. Heres one to improve contrast, if its well received I will do a few more.

First one so bare with me lol

Improving contrast in the Gimp

Firstly Open the image you want to use

Have the layers dialogue open (CTRL+L)

The image Ive chosen is quite dark to show a marked difference in contrast , it isn’t a great image but I think it shows just what can be acheived

1.

Create a duplicate of the image by right clicking on the background in the layers dialogue and choosing duplicate layer and rename it by double clicking on the text , Ive called mine contrast layer.

2.

Make sure the contrast layer is selected then right click on your image >Layers>colours> Desaturate

Then right click again >Layers>Colours>invert

3.

This will leave you with an image looking something like this

4.

Go back to your layers dialogue and choose Overlay from the drop down list
You can see if you click the eye on the contrast layer the difference between the two images

Before

After

You may need to play around with brigtness/Contrast a little afterwards as depending on the first image It can come out a little OTT.
