Lenses Overview - Video
It is quite normal and common for newcomers to this wonderful hobby of dSLRs to be a little confused about the different types of lenses available. I have therefore made a video giving an overview of different lenses and what the numbers mean.
Although this is on YouTube for practical reasons, I made it last week especially for Pixalo members and I hope you will find it useful. I intend making further videos that are more tutorial in their nature so if you have a specific subject you think would be good for me tocover, please let me know. I hope you find these two (one video in two parts) helpful, please let me know your feedback so I can develop videos that you find practical. Cheers, Rob

Re: Lenses Overview - Video
Hi Rob,watched the two videos and they will be helpful to the novice. One point that did strike me though was that today, most newcomers to photography will be buying a Digital camera, and a digital camera with a crop sensor.Whilst a 'nifty fifty' on a 35mm film camera [or a full frame 35mm DSLR] will approximate the field of view of the human eye, on our crop cameras this no longer applies. It's a minor thing but could be confusing to a novice and it may have been handy to start off the whole thing briefly explaining this conversion thing?:
This is a good idea and good of you to be taking the time to do it. John.

Re: Lenses Overview - Video
Thanks for the encouragement everyone, good to get your feedback.
Water, I do agree with you but I deliberately decided not to go down the road of 35mm equivalences for the simple reason that the video is, as you realised, aimed at novices and with so many different size sensors and multiplication factors, it would be very confusing. The factor can be anything from 1x, 1.3x, 1.5x, 1.6x or even 2x so suggesting all those differences would confuse. I was using the 50mm point only as a reference point so that they could see that wide angle is less and telephoto is more. The 50mm has always been a generalisation and still is but it's adequate for understanding the differences in focal lengths. It might be that I over-simplified the point so it is smething I'll think about for future videos as I have others I intend to make and post on here. Thanks for making the point, it is definitely a factor to consider ![]() Cheers, Rob |

Re: Lenses Overview - Video
I'm sure I heard you mention that 50mm = human sight in 35mm terms. I accept that you were only using this focal length to illustrate the wide/tele focal lengths, but maybe if these tutorials are aimed at the beginner dSLR user, most of whom will be using cameras with a crop factor of 1.6, you could say that 35mm is the focal length that gives the equivalent of human sight and anything under is WA, anything over is tele.
This is not meant as a criticism, just an observation. I'm sure that the novice would find your tutorials most useful. Well done Rob
