Photoshop Scratch Disk

Plug-Ins and Scratch Disks
Go to EDIT, PREFERENCES, PLUG-INS AND SCRATCH DISKS

Plug-ins are filters or commands that help Photoshop’s functionality. There all in the same folder so that Photoshop can access them in the correct way.

As Photoshop is used, it also uses hard disk space to cache file data as things are copied and layered. Especially when we are using large files, that’s when it’s more important to have free space for the scratch disk.

A scratch disk is your hard drive, and Photoshop uses it as temporary space or virtual memory if your PC does not have enough RAM. If you only have one hard drive or partition in your computer, then the scratch disk will be the drive where your operating system is installed (the C drive on a Windows system).
You can change the scratch disk location and add multiple scratch disks from Photoshop Preferences. Many power users like to create a dedicated hard drive partition for the Photoshop scratch disk. Although Photoshop will function with a single scratch disk on the system partition, you can improve performance by setting the scratch disk to be the fastest drive in your system. Other useful guidelines for setting scratch disks are to avoid using the same drive where your operating system is installed, avoid using a drive where the files you edit are stored, and don't use network or removable drives for a scratch disk.

1- Click here to show a list other preferences.

2- Check this box and lick choose to find an additional plug-ins folder. Photoshop plug in folder is usually in C: / Program Files / Adobe / Photoshop CS (or CS2) / Plug-Ins.

3- Enter the old style Photoshop serial number as required by some plug-ins.

4- Click to select up to 4 disks that can be used as scratch disks. You might want to use more than one disk if you have it, and if you work with large files.

I hope this mini tutorial is helpful.
