Reciprocity - a video tutorial
Reciprocity is a word that frightens some people only because it sounds complicated but it needn't be. It's as simple as this: you punch me on the nose, I punch you on the nose back! I reciprocated your action
![]() Seriously though, understanding this principle is important for new SLR users seeking to get to grips with using shutter speeds, apertures and ISO so i have made a video tutorial on the subject which I hope will be of help to some. It's all a bit fruity at the beginning but stick with it, it (hopefully) all becomes clear ![]() Cheers, Rob

Re: Reciprocity - a video tutorial
LOL Jack, I have spent a fair bit of time in the US and have a lot of friends over there. I have been 13 times and the total comes to about 18 months! But I don't think that had any influence on my fruity example

Very fruity Rob
But I certainly enjoyed it. I now know how to balance the shutter speed and apperture and where it stands for. Thank you very much for taking the time to do these video's |

Re: Reciprocity - a video tutorial
Small error, Rob. One stop faster than f/2.8 is f/2... not f/1.8, since 2.8 / 1.4 = 2

Re: Reciprocity - a video tutorial
True VP but in a video like this aimed at beginners, it would be confusing to list f2 as the next f stop when actually the vast majority of lenses go up from 2.8 to 1.8 which is why I used that, in line with the majority of tuitional books that I have read. f1.8 is generally used as one stop up from f2.8 in those and on lenses so I felt it best to stick with that.
This is something I have faced a lot of while doing these vids, deciding when to go with 'absolute accuracy' and when to go with 'clarity that avoids confusion'. It is a bigger problem than we realise as we are so used to this stuff that we don't often think about it. Also dSLRs nowadays usually offer a choice of partial stops as either half or third stops and so on and I felt this would all lose beginners completely! Thanks for pointing it out and I would be interested to hear opinions on whether you think I should aim entirely for technical accuracy or for 'best fit' which avoids confusion. Cheers, Rob |
