Something I learned on my first wedding

Hi Together,

I thought I share something I learned on my first wedding shoot last weekend.

What I learned:
If you are shooting a scene which is just happening and you think you got the shot, don't stop because there is something better.

Move around, look at the background, look at different angles, look at things to shoot through. One simple scene can be seen in so many different ways.

The pictures are showing the father of the groom holding his speech which took around 5 minutes. I tried to force myself to constantly move around to find a different angle while at the same time of course always taking pictures of the bride and groom.

I think it worked out and I'm happy that I'm able to give this single event in a couple of different options.

But:
I should have gone behind the couple and the father and to take the pictures out of their perspective, I think this would have been the shot!

Something to remember for the future!

Re: Something I learned on my first wedding

Yes, No 6 is nice as a picture but in the context of the wedding No 3 is definitely the one I would go for. The lighting is nice and even, we can see the man's eyes, he looks like he is saying something interesting because of the whole demeanour and the light above is looking like a subtle spotlight, adding a sense of importance to him as the speaker.

Really like that one :o)

Cheers,
Rob

Re: Something I learned on my first wedding

Frank , were you using available lighting, or did you have some off camera strobes ?

From the last wedding I did I managed to sneak in before the meal started & position 2 flashes on light stands, about 10 feet either side of where speakers would be & fired them up in to white ceiling. This gave a nice even light, allowing me to move around from a distance using 200mm (also not invading their space)

Some examples here :-

Not the most artisitic of lighting , but safe enough to capture the main moments

Re: Something I learned on my first wedding

Hi Dave,

all was shot in available light.

I tried some speedlight lighting but it did not work as was not able the ballance the mood of the really night ambiant light and the flash light.

Your light and shots are great, that worked really well and are sharp like hell as all of your pictures!

There is a long way to go for me....
