Steps for shooting Infrared (IR) using IR filter
Here are the basic steps for taking an Infrared / IR photograph with a Digital camera, that has an IR filter fitted to lens (eg. Hoya R72)
Steps to start out. 1) Ideally set WB with IR filter on. Due to darkness of filter you need to set ISO1600 & then set custom WB by pointing at grass. 2) Return to low ISO & set to shoot RAW if possible 3) Due to long exposure needed you'll need a tripod 4) Turn to manual focus 5) Take filter off & compose shot. Put filter back on being careful not to change focus 6) With camera in Manual mode choose something like 20 sec exposure at f/8 7) Either through remote cable or self timer , take shot 8) Once taken , view histogram of shot. If too dark, increase exposure & vice versa 9) Voila , IR shot Note the IR focus point is different from normal light focus point. Older lenses used to show this position, but I always put to infinity position & play it by ear. |

Re: Steps for shooting Infrared (IR) using IR filter
Great stuff, cheers Dave. I'll give this a go and see how I get on now I have your IR lens.
Iain, keep looking out for an IR pick from me. If it's a good un, forget buying the filter off me. If it's rubbish, get your cheque book out <g> Cheers, Rob |

Re: Steps for shooting Infrared (IR) using IR filter
Dave, did you use your camera set to mono when using the IR filter or did you convert it afterwards?
I have done a couple of shots just to see if it works. It does let light through but not sure it is just the IR. It gives me a bright red picture which whe desaturated looks just like any other picture. This suggests to me that it might not work with my camera but could just be me doing something wrong. Hang on in there Iain, could yet be yours! <g> Cheers, Rob |

Did you try both your 20D and 40D - just wondering if there is a difference between these two. I seem to remember seeing somewhere that different cameras work differently with IR
