Video tutorial - White Balance

Hi all, I have just added my latest video on YouTube, made specifically with Pixalo members in mind, especially those who are relative newcomers to the world of dSLRs in the hope you will find them useful.

This one covers the subject of white balance, what it is, why it is important and how to use the custom white balance facility on your camera. Although I have shown it using my Canon 40D, the principle is the same for most others, just slightly different buttons or whatever.

Apologies that the picture quality isn't as good as I would have liked, not sure what I got wrong but it should still be fine for understanding the point.

Hope you find it helpful.

Cheers,
Rob

Very interesting again. Gonna have a look again on the white balance tomorrow. Cause I've never used that custom white balance before.

Re: Video tutorial - White Balance

THank you so much for your excellent tutorials! you are so easy to understand and i understand things a bit more clearly than reading the books...
so , i was using program mode the other day and the result was way overexposed...i thought the program mode was supposed to pick the right exposure for you?do i leave it in program mode and just turn down the ISO? also, sometimes in auto focus, my camera will not focus on a subject (a face) so i have to go into manual. does this maybe have something to do with the spot metering? Also, sometimes , i will be in full manual mode and when i press the shutter, it wont even take a picture...grrrr....these things make me think my camera is not working properly. I very much appreciate your advice!!!!

Re: Video tutorial - White Balance

Hi Tjay,

Ok, just to clarify here, the term 'manual' can be applied to two different things so I think this is confusing you slightly. There is manual exposure and manual focus, two very different things. When you are using the Manual Mode on your camera, you are selecting the shutter speed and the aperture yourself. The focusing issue is separate and is not affected by the mode you are in. To use manual focusing, you flick a switch on the lens itself. This switch will usually be labelled AF and M so you put it to the M setting.

So, back to your main question: yes, Program Mode is designed to get the exposure right most of the time Leave the ISO alone unless you really need more light and can't get it through the shutter speed or the aperture. So, ISO 100 if you can, no problem to go up to ISO 200 or 400 without worrying about noise on most cameras.

If you are needing manual focusing, it could be because you are in a very dark situation or there is very little detail in the subject. AF works by looking for areas of contrast and adjusting the focus accordingly. Spot metering is about the light so that isn't an issue here but spot focusing mode (DSLRs usually have at least a centre-weighted or centre-spot mode for focusing) will make sure the camera is trying to focus on the main subject and not on the background or whatever.

If the camera can't focus at all, it won't let you fire the shutter so it is probably this that caused the problem rather than the fact you were in manual mode. If the camera can't focus where you want it, a good method is to point somewhere else about the same distance away that has more contrast and half press the shutter to get the focusing. Now use the FL button if your camera has one (Focus Lock) to turn back to your subject and shoot.

Hope those pointers help but please remember that manual metering mode (where you set both the aperture and the shutter speed) is entirely different to manual focusing mode. The M on the dial on top of your camera means Manual metering, the M/AF switch on your lens is where you set for manual focusing.

Cheers,
Rob
