Another newbie

Hi, I just took up digital photography late last year after a break from my old hobby of about fifteen years. Used to do a bit of photography and guess I was a little slow to adapt to the digital change. Anyway, as all you old fellas know I needn't have worried and am now enjoying my hobby as much as ever although I still dont feel comfortable about using enhancement programmes such as Photo shop. Bit daft I know but maybe I'll come round to the idea soon enough.

I have a really basic kit right now, Nikon D5000, and am just finding my way around. Always was a Nikon freak so I didn't feel the need to go elsewhere, actually I quite like the D5000 but am looking to move higher when I feel capable enough. For now though I'll be looking around for as many tips as I can and look forward to taking part in some of your great threads.

Oh, my other great love is pipes and pipe smoking, another great way to relax.

Welcome to Pixalo Piper

You and I have a great deal in common. I also had a break in between stopping film photography and starting in digital. I too am a Sahff London boy, I shoot with a Nikon, and I've smoked a pipe for around 40 years (not the same one or all in one go!)

Are you my long-lost brother?

Hahaha Dabhand, I may well be, I sport a beard too ! Well well, I'm quite surprised at that, you told mum yet?

Thanks for the welcome, to be honest I havent had too much time to browse tinternet regarding photography but am really happy to have found a forum and will now try to spend more time here looking for tips and general chatter. Like everyone I like to think I have a decent eye for a shot but am amazed at the difference in the digital world and the film world, certainly save myself a few bob on film rolls the way we can now simply delete the duff pictures. The learning process, what with the incredible equipment and tinternet to boot is much quicker than it was back in the day.

So yeah, thanks again for the welcome and its good too to meet a fellow piper. I look forward to talking again and sharing some shots and comments on what looks like a great forum.

Re: Another newbie

You couldn't have found a nicer fellow to have filled the roll of your long lost brother. I have A straight line to northern Ireland and found my tenth removed cousin twice over and found out he takes better pictures then me. I couldn't have found a better inspiration at what there is to see out there. Welcome to the site and pixalo, have fun.

I'm actually a Scouser living in Lewisham/Blackheath Dabhand, Lions country and love the place and people too.

Thanks too Boofers for the welcome and I'm glad you've been so successful in finding lost relatives as well as finding so much inspiration here. I've just had a quick look around the forum at some of the photographs from the members and I'm completely humbled, totally, so much talent here and in such numbers too. What a collection of art and skill, I have so much to learn its unbelievable but where better to learn than from the people here on the forum. I'm massively impressed by what I've seen and read and although I feel at ease I also know that I'm starting all over again and looking forward to it.

I was dragged up in Walworth - SE17. I used to go to Blackheath to fly model planes and I saw the Supremes at the Lewisham Odeon.

Great area, you're amongst greats, Charlie Chaplin was raised in the same area and even based one of his short films on his experiences there. He made a film called Easy Street which was filmed with a backdrop identical to the row in East Street where he hung around, he just changed the T for a Y in the title. Er, and I used to live in Walworth Road too . Small world eh. You're not on the Pipesmokers forum too are you?

Wow! That is close. Well within my patch. I lived in Thurlow St (obliterated by the Aylesbury Estate in all but name), then Aylesbury Road then Villa Street very Close to Albany Road. Went to school at Mina Road.

Not on the pipe smokers forum.

Re: Another newbie

P-E, Jason and Woody for the welcome. Just realising from reading on the forum and looking at so many great photographs just how much of a different ball game digital is from film. A whole new ball game, I'm going to have to start from scratch and ditch my thoughts about image manipulation. Mixed feelings as I know absolutely nothing about using such programmes so its a whole new challenge. Thanks again for the welcome to the forum.

You might be surprised as to how little manipulation is done to many images.

Editing can be as simple as a tweak of contrast or levels and a little sharpening. Nothing more than push processing film and dodging and burning a print. Its just that it is easier quicker and cleaner on the computer (maybe not as much fun) than in your kitchen or bathroom.

Re: Another newbie

Yeah I understand that some images are just slightly tweaked Dab others though, many are really really impressive have had what seems to me to be a whole lot of work done to them. To me at this point it seems like a whole new art, a new discipline and a whole new set of skills that need to be learned. I'm looking forward to it dont get me wrong, the possibilities with digital as I'm fast discovering are limitless, its a bit like learning another language. I'm only just learning about the whole digital thing too Dab, RAW for example, obviously if I know nothing about image editing then RAW will be new to me too. But as I say I'm really excited about finding out and experimenting.
