As I am your newest member at this time - hello everyone!

I'm a liftime stills enthusiast. I ran a photographic club at school, and my first job had a large photo processing element to it, but no real photography. The closest was using a photographic bench. We used Kodak MR plate and used liquid photo sensitive emulsions in various ways. In my job now I work with professional photographers with both stills and video, but in a way you would never guess. I have never had regular access to a darkroom, and my favorite format was black and white.

I started with Brownie box cameras, had a Kodak 'Retinette' as my first 35mm camera, which was PX'd for the Pentax SV I bought in 1965, from Wallace Heaton in Fleet Street, which I still have. I've also got an Olympus (from memory) Pen-e, An Oylmpus OM2 SP, a Rollicord 5b and a Bronica ERS.

As time went by, and with the lack of darkroom availability, gradually the cameras got used less and less. Then one day a few years ago, I bought a Nikon Coolpix 885 for an Italian holiday. It gave very reasonable results and I was not humping kilos of gear around! I also had a re-think on what I wanted from a camera. I got talking to a retired pro in Sorrento, who told me he scanned the negs from his film cameras to make storage and accessibilty easier. I have many slides and prints in 'safe' places around the house, so safe, they are buried and never get looked at! Now, my images are on my hard drive or CD/DVD, and I can get to them easily and print only the ones I want.

I think it is fair to say the Coolpix revived my interest, so much so, I recently got a Nikon D70s. Last year I also upgraded my video camera to a Canon MVX3i. I was never a big cine fan due to the editing complexities. My first camcorder never got a lot of use for the same reasons, but with the software now available, the Canon gets used as much as the Nikons.

My new Grandson is a good enough reason on his own, but I think the bug has bitten again.

Sorry this has turned out to be a bit of a saga, but at least you now know me.

Re: First Post

Welcome to the site and community

That's a great introduction and a lot of background information on your good self
Although my interest in photography doesn't extend to cine we do have something else in common, both of us got back into photography thanks to a Nikon Coolpix 885. this was my first venture in to digital and from their I moved on to a Canon point and shoot, then eventually onto a couple of Canon DSLR's. I guess you could say I was well and truly bitten by the bug as well.

It's nice to have you join us, have a look around at the various sections of the site and forums, I'll set up gallery access for you so that you can jump straight in there and upload some of your pictures for us all to see. Finally feel free to start new threads or reply to any existing ones and if you need anything or have any questions, just shout

Re: First Post

Hi Graham & thanks fo taking the time for such an interesting intro.

I also had an Olympus OM2 plus OM1 in the past. I did have a dabble at a darkroom in the spare bedroom when younger, as I too loved B&W (& still do with vengance) . Only problem I found was it took too much time plus I wasn't that great at it.

I also waned from photography for 10 years or so, until like yourself the intro of Digital Compacts got me intrested again. I haven't stopped since & now own the predecessor to your model the Nikon D70. Cracking cameras.

I now find with Photo Shop I can start to get B&W shots nearer to what I had in my mind....although still a way to go.

Can't wait to see some of your latest & also scanned shots.

I'm intrigued how you work with the Photography business now

Re: First Post

Hello and nice to meet you. Nice to learn so much. Whatever you do in photography, you should make sure there is writing involved. (book, newspaper, magazine). I havent seen your photos yet, but you write very well. Excellent intro.
