Getting Going

Good morning. Thought I'd say hello since I've been reading the forum over the past few days since joining it.

I've spent the past few years shooting with a Canon 350d and have just traded up to a Canon 500d which does seem to have better focusing ability. Have a EF-S 18-85mm f4-5.6 IS USM lens (which I used on the 350d for the past few years). Thought about going to a 50D, but neither my style or use really justified that extra expenditure as as far as I could see faster focusing and more weather/bomb proof were the key additional qualities and so I've put the money towards looking for a new lens instead.

My pictures vary from those of the kids (about 70%), to those of landscape (about 20%) to those of everything else (10%). They vary in quality from absolutely stunning to 'mobile phone style'.

Really, I'm still trying to learn and so I'm hiring a Canon 70-200mm f2.8 L IS USM lens and a 50mm f1.4 shortly to take some pictures at my brother-in-law's wedding. I'll have them for a week, so I've got them a few days before and taking the day off work so that I can get some practice in!

I'm looking for some good advice on how to get better pictures. Kit is one thing, but it is how you use the kit that makes the fundamental difference between acceptable and stunning.

I'm also working on trying to find a good way to showcase my best pictures. I've had digital cameras since around 2002, and have taken around 33,000 pictures (I have trouble deleting), all backed up on two different hard drives stored in different locations as well as on a PC since I am paranoid about have a catestrophic failure of technology (I've had HDs die in the past). There seems to be a big increase in online printers these days and so looking at these to produce "photobooks" so any advice on the good ones would be appreciated. I've not seen a thread on these, so may start one as to me getting a good quality keepsake / showcase for the photos is what it is about for me.

I thnk I've probably exceeded the unwritten word limit on introductions!

R.

Welcome to Pixalo Redmug

Best way to get advice on improving pictures is to post some up and get feedback. If you have kept the 350D, you can use both cameras at the wedding to save you having to change lenses.

There was a recent thread on photobooks -

If you want specific info try the search/advanced search. I found the above thread by using the advanced search with no username (exact name box unticked) and searched on photobooks in the thread titles.
