Greetings

Hi
I am a very keen amateur who would like to up his game , have messed about with cameras since childhood even used the school darkroom. Have started over the last 2years to think a bit more about my images . I unfortunately and very accidently, last week, propelled my Lumix TZ7 onto the very solid carpark floor of an Inverness Mall, smashing it beyond repai rbut am planning to fulfil my ambition to have an SLR and am seeking some advice.

Maybe it was fate lending a hand in the car park accident and you were meant to get a dSLR!

If you look in the What Camera Should I Buy? forum, you will find some other members have asked this very question, and you will probably find the answers useful.

In a nutshell, shortlist three or four cameras and then go somewhere where you can handle them. See how the settings are accessed and changed (it does not matter at this time if you don't know what the settings do) and how the menus are set out. You wil find that one camera will feel better, be easier to change modes and settings and be more logically laid out for you and that is the one to get.

One thing to bear in mind is that you are buying into a system and the more popular (common?) brands will have better support from third party manufacturers who will offer accessories at cheaper prices than the main brands. However, at entry level this is not so much of an issue, but if you have an interest in one type of photography such as macro, it is as well to ensure that this is supported by the maker and/or third party manufacturers with the availability of lenses etc.

Then when you've made all your comparisons..........buy a Nikon!

Only joking! . Choose your weapon well!
