Smile Greetings from Holland - New and searching for the "perfect" (re-) starters kit

Hallo all.

My name is Erik, I am 44 and from Holland. 2010 will be my year of restarting my hobby of photgraphing. About 15 years ago I stopped due to all kind of busy reasons. From my father I got a Minolta XD-7 and we did some nice shooting together. Now I want to start with the serious digital stuff.

After much reading on the internet, thank you for this site and lots of others, I am thinking of buying a Canon 50D with the new Canon EF-S 15-85mm f/3.5-5.6 IS USM lens. The first period (about a year I think) I will be taking pictures of my son, citytrips and nature mostly.

I really appreciate any kind of advice you could give me . Many greetings to you all and I hope I can learn a lot from you all.

Bye, Erik.

Welcome to Pixalo Erik. There is plenty of advice about kit around, but I am sure you will be fine with the Canon. Enjoy yourself

Re: Greetings from Holland - New and searching for the "perfect" (re-) starters kit

welcome to the site.
its a decent combination that you are going for but it is a bit limiting in that unless you get another longer lens you are limiting yourself on focal length. If your happy with that then fine, but even if you went with something like a 28 - 135 IS it would give you a bit more length

Re: Greetings from Holland - New and searching for the "perfect" (re-) starters kit

Consider the following package. It would start you down the Canon path if thats the way you might consider going.

Canon EOS 50D Digital SLR Camera Body

Canon EOS 50D Digital SLR Camera Body (2807B023AA) - Warehouse Express

Tamron AF 18-270mm f3.5-6.3 Di II VC LD Aspherical (IF) Macro

Tamron AF 18-270mm f3.5-6.3 Di II VC LD Aspherical (IF) Macro - Canon Fit () - Warehouse Express

Whilst I think you may have to look for a deal in Holland rather than the UK the above will give you an idea of one route to take.

I started out with a Canon Eos 350D ( Rebel ) and the older version of this lens. Results with that combination where great but I wanted a full size body. I then replaced the 350D with a 40D to give me the feel and control of the bigger body.

I eventually replaced the Tamron with Canon L glass, the Tamron was sold on and the person who bought it off me is very Happy with it.

I've since gone to the 5D2 and boy thats a well worth it step up.

Look hard at how much you can afford and go as good as you can from the start whether it be Canon, Nikon or maybe another make.

Re: Greetings from Holland - New and searching for the "perfect" (re-) starters kit

Welcome to Pixalo Erik

If you have any lenses from your Minolta days you might want to check out the sony range of cameras as they may well fit the Sony mount.

For general use 18mm at the wide end is good, and the telephoto end can be almost as much as you want, but for most 300mm is more than adequate.

So you could go for a two lens set up, say an 18-70 or 80 and a 70-300, or if you would rather have one general purpose lens, the Tamron 18-270 or the Sigma 18-250 are worth a look. If they are over budget they both do 18-200 lenses too that are cheaper.

Re: Greetings from Holland - New and searching for the "perfect" (re-) starters kit

Hello fiona Chirs and Dabhand,

Thank you all for your answers and advices. Today I was in two dutch photoshops and in both shops I got the same advice: buy a Nikon D90 with the Nikkor AF-S 16-85mm DX f/3.5-5.6 G ED VR lens. They said the D90 is just a little bit slower than the Canon 50D. The colours of Nikon would be more realistic. They also said that the new 15-85 of Canon isn't that good, especially at 15mm (straight lines are not staight anymore) and that the Nikkor lense I mentioned above is a much better lense. I want to keep my budget at a maximum of about 1000-1200 EUR (905-1086 GBP). I thought I was so sure bout the Canon 50D buth now I am in great doubt again.

Hello huppekees,

I think I am almost there: the D90 with Nikkor AF-S 18-200mm VR II DX (the new 18-200)

No matter what you decide on have a play with one before you buy, it's not all down to specification, some will just suit you better than others

Wow more dutchies are invading Pixalo. Welkom Eric.

I can't say anything bad about the D90, infact I'm pretty sure it is a very good camera. And the 18-200 will do you just fine. Good suggestion

Thank you for all your advices and remarks. I am taking it all in consideration. 16-85 or 18-200 thats the question for me now.

Re: Greetings from Holland - New and searching for the "perfect" (re-) starters kit

Although I think the 16-85 will produce better images. Since you are starting, it would be nice if you've got some reach by just the 1 lens. I would advice the 18-200, it is a good overall lens.
