Hello from the East Midlands

Hi all,

I'm Mark, and have recently found this site through a car owners club I'm a member of.

I'm very slowly getting in to photography and would like to develop my skills and knowledge.

I currently own a Canon 600D SLR with a 18mm-135mm EFS lens. I'd like to learn a little more about how to use this camera and how to get 'that' really smart photo.

For the most part, I take photos of my car (sad I know ), but I'd also like to move on to a few landscapes as well as some macro shots.

I'll add a few pictures and let you guys constructively (I hope ) criticise and advise.

Anyway, enough waffle from me.

Mark

Re: Hello from the East Midlands

Thanks guys. Is there a way that I can share a link to my photobucket album for some pictures to be looked at and critiqued? I don't really want to do one at a time as it'd take forever - and I'm far too impatient and inexperienced to wait that long.

Thanks

Links to personal web sites are not permitted in posts, but you can have up to two in your signature provided they are to personal sites and not commercial ones.

You will get better, more pertinent comments by displaying individual or sets of images because the people who can be bothered to follow your links will, faced with lots of pictures, only be able to give a general comment that will not be of too much use to you.

We have a size limit for displaying pictures of no more that 1024 pixels on the longest side and under 300kb. However, if your images conform to these specs - or your host has a facility for resizing - you can post a link (or links) with [img] tags to display the image(s) directly.

We have found that in general, fewer people follow links compared to the comments you might get by displaying images on the forums. Also if you have a lot if images in your on line album it will overwhelm anyone looking and you won't get the feedback that you are looking for.

Why not pick a few of your favourites and post them up?

EDIT: Just seen that you have done exactly this with your aircraft set

Did you hear about the Old Bull and the Young Bull standing on a hill over looking all the female cows and the young bull said to the old bull

Lets run down and make lo..ve to a cow

The old bull said

Lets walk slowly down and make lo..ve to them all

there is a motto is there

no offence just a casual joke

Haha very good. I like the sentiment to that. Along with Graham's advice I've done exactly that. Now having seen the kind of feedback that I can get, I'd rather do it bit by bit and get a decent critique rather than just a general observation.

Re: Hello from the East Midlands

Notts ST I was born and raised in Glasgow and migrated to Australia and lived mostly in Perth WA and did lots of traveling and 15 years ago I moved to remote mining town called Broken Hill not far from the SA NSW border .

Population is around 20k but every time I go back to Perth to visit my kids or family there are so amazed at easy laid back I am I keep saying the move was the best one ever , the town is small and very remote

life is full of stress so why add to it by your surroundings we often go down to Adelaide and you see people race from one set of traffic lights to the next all they are doing is putting unwanted stress and using lots more fuel what is the point you are wasting money

Re: Hello from the East Midlands

chrisa we have traffic cops in the outback as well and in this case you can have Broken Hill traffic or Mildura or Wentworth traffic police and I have seen several out there . you would have to be unlucky to get caught but for me I cannot afford it so I stay on the speed limit and at night we go at 10 to 20 below depending on wild life

The cost of the trip down and home is $170 in fuel and then there is food ect so cannot afford any more

Re: Hello from the East Midlands

chrisa This was the same road my wife got the shot I was sitting on 100ks an hour I had seen him and was slowing down

they will run in front of the car and Emus are solid so if you are going to fast you may wipe the car out if you hit the wrong way roo bars work if you are doing around the speed limit after they you risk going over the bonnet and into the cab

I have seen a roo end up dead in the passenger's seat and that was a big red ones from North of Western Australia they often reach 5 or 6 feet tall

Wow now that is remote. I'd be doing exactly the same as you. Nice and steady all along that road, soaking up the scenery and wildlife. I love driving out in to the countryside out here and frequently just get lost in thought. You don't have to fly here there and everywhere, just enjoy what is in front of you.

Re: Hello from the East Midlands

Notts ST there is a 110 limit all over Australia except some sections of the Sturt HWy Adelaide to Darwin just out side Alice springs there is a section that has a no limit open speed

But traffic Police often use aircraft to track your speed in remote areas in WA you come across huge while lines across the road they are exactly 1 kilometer apart they time you in the aircraft and radio a traffic car further down the road or next town

But when you drive say 5 or 6 hours take your time enjoy it relax you will feel better for it if you speed you are have to worry about hitting wild life or traffic police or wild life out on the road lots of dead roos in the middle of the road (some one does clean them up but it may take days )

Re: Hello from the East Midlands

here is a example if you are over the speed limit by 10 ks you are fined $248 plus demerit points

Now I have only just bought this new car and it has Cruise control which I am so happy about my last car a 4 cyl magna 1994 would often hit 130 ks an hour if you were tired it was so easy to do so

I sold the magna at 300,000 ks and did not burn any oil I change the oil every 5000, ks in all my cars

Now we set a speed and go when you are out there it is just so easy to slip past the speed limit in a remote setting

So far touch wood I have not been booked for speeding or any thing for 30 odd years was my last run in when I first got my license I was buying tickets to the police mans ball a number of times but being a Scotsman and a scrooge i saw the light and tried not to get caught

(now I admit I have as i said in my last car often hit 130 when I was tired but never caught so I am no angel just lucky)

we have a TV show here called brit cops and from what I can see they are very much on the ball and do not seem to give much le way but the traffic is so heavy lots of car

I guess that in your environment cars have an easy life. Over here there is lots of stop/start driving, traffic jams, and recently poor maintenance of minor roads that leave potholes of various sizes a lot of which can damage tyres and wheels.

I had a Vauxhall Calibra (similar to but a bit smaller than your Holden Monero with a 2 litre engine) sold it with over 330,000ks on it and it ran like new. never had any major trouble with it.

Our max national speed limit is 112kph although there are many roads with 96, 80, 64, 48 and now even 32 in some places. Fortunately, my car has a speed restriction on it that limits it to 250kph!!

Some are worse than others, but these days police have targets to chase to justify their existence and will often deal with things by the book rather than with regard to the individual circumstances.

Re: Hello from the East Midlands

ut these days police have targets to chase to justify their existence interesting there is a huge huge bungle and outcry from a new item this week regarding that subject

The News got hold of a traffic cop in SA complaining he had spend 12 hours on duty and had only handed out two tickets and had not reached his quota

this has really got some attention with police denying that they have set quotas

Our cars have a good but hard life many of our roads in the outback are poorly maintained and when you have huge road trains on them trucks with 3 or 4 or more trailors that is a lot of tires

I also drive in temps of 125 c and that is where it feel down in the end I was unable to keep it cool in summer I was ok if I was moving but a trip down to Adelaide involved lots of slow traffic and traffic lights and I was unable to keep the temp down even with new radiator and fans , the engine was tired and wanted to die sort of thing we kept waiting for that big bang but never happens , in the end we just could not risk leaving town with it ,

Another view this is looking East of town and the next town is a small rural town called Menindee and then 900k is Sydney it is flat for 700ks and then the Blue mountains and Sydney

Another thing with this image is except for the road the view would have been the exact same as the day the mrs cooks little boy found Australia nothing would have changed and that is the what most of the outback is like totally unchanged
