Hello from Edinburgh
Hi peeps.
I'm peel from edinburgh. I'm a 36 year old self employed software engineer and web designer based in the city center. Been at this photography malarky for all of 6 weeks so I'm really wet behind the ears I've never owned a cam b4 i got my d50 so it's all rather new and bewildering to me.I found TPF by following a link Jewel posted @ nikonians so the usual £50 finders fee goes to her ![]() I've been seeing some really nice pics here which have sparked the old grey matter and just as importantly I've not noticed any boring "my cam is better than your cam" threads which is nice The place seems well moderated, busy and friendly. Feel free to have a poke at my loose tights but be aware, I'm REALLY new to these magic box / soul catcher devices u call cameras! |

Welcome Mr Peel sir!!
Thanks for the kind words. I am not a Nikon user myself but there are many here that are, together we will do our best to help you feel at home and also get the most from your new toy. ![]() Don't be afraid to ask if you want to know anything, we all started somewhere so we don't see any questions, no matter how basic you might think they are as being silly or stupid. I hope you enjoy the site. Ohh and Jewel owes us £50 so we can call it quits now

tnx.1st Q then. Seeing as this is a multi-format forum, what's the recommendations when quoting focal lengths? My D50 has a crop factor or 1.5 so do I quote my lengths as they are written on the tin or do I convert them to 35mm terms? e.g. my kit lens is 18-55mm if mounted on a full frame camera so do I quote 27-82.5mm so we are all talking from the same numbers? |

Ahh that’s actually a great first question...
Your lens focal lengths do not change due to the body that you may be using it on, if it is an 18-55mm lens, then it will always be a 18-55mm lens. The 1.5x crop does just that, crops the available range of the lens due to the size of the sensor. The sensor is smaller than a full frame camera so is only capable of capturing the image from the centre section of your lens, and that’s why it appears to be magnified. The focal length however still remains the same. |
