Cool Hello from Florida

Hi! I'm new to the Pixalo Community and have joined in hopes of gettting a better understanding of my camera. I have a Nikon Digital SLR D50 camera. I have use it extensive in the autofocus mode but would like to branch out into other modes. Specifically I wanted to take pictures of the full moon but have had no progress in setting my camera to a spot mode. I am concerened that my lens in not a CPU lens. It is a AF-S NIKKOR 55-200mm 1.4-5.6G ED lens. I would appreciate receiving guidance on using the "metering" function which, according, to the manual works only with CPU lens. Is my lens a CPU lens?

Welcome to Pixalo Joe

I think you will find that any 'G' series lens is a CPU lens.

To use the spot metering pattern, just select it from the metering modes (don't know if this is a button/switch or a menu option on the D50).

You will now only be using the centre part of the frame to meter, so make sure that when you frame the picture the moon is dead centre. A half press of the shutter release will lock the focus and exposure and if you maintain this half pressure, you can re-compose your picture if you want to include any cloud etc. Just fully depress the shutter release when you are happy with your composition.

I think you will find that 200mm is not really good enough to get the sort of pictures you want without cropping and enlarging them. I've got some taken with a 200mm lens that I'll try to dig out to show you what I mean.

As you get more proficient you will probably find manual modes better for this subject.

Re: Hello from Florida

Here is a 200mm moon shot. Spot metered - 1/500th sec f5.6 ISO200. Just a little contrast increase and sharpening for the web.

Taken with a D70s, so same sensor as your D50.
