Hey, everyone!

Hey, my alias is Firebrand. I happened to find this site purely by accident during googling on mushroom photography. LOL! But yeah, it's cool.

I am completely deaf and have several disabilities, as well as a list of medical conditions that try to make my life hell. I'm happy to say that I try my best to stay on top of it all with my hobbies, including photography. I would post pics in my gallery, but I have TONS of pics to catch up on in editing first. Wish I had Photoshop, but my budget is so limited for me to have that luxury. So, yeah, I use a cheap editing software that came with my laptop.

I'm not knowledgeable in photography, or especially, the jargons used in photography. I would have learned if it wasn't for my deafness. I pretty much learned my way through experimenting.

Oddly enough, my perspective had been altered after I had a major surgery last May and my photography hobby has taken on a new level. It's been so much fun. It was worth the price I'd pay after doing photo-shoots in the wild nature around my home.

Currently, I'm researching for a camera to upgrade to. It's been such a challenge to find a camera that would meet my needs and be affordable, as I am on disability with a very limited income. Not only that, I'm in need of a durable camera, as I am quite clumsy most of the time. There are times I'm extremely clumsy due to a vestibular (balance) disorder.

Thanks in advance for the welcome!

Sincerely,
Firebrand

Welcome to Pixalo Firebrand

There are several compact cameras now that are 'tough'. That is waterproof to around 3 metres, dustproof and shock resistant.

If you search Tough in the News Forum it should bring them up.

I've done it for you

My search brought back three pages, but these are from the first page. The ones at the bottom are the oldest, but will also be cheaper secondhand.

Re: Hey, everyone!

Hi Firebrand and

If you are on a tight budget for software, you can work very well with GIMP and Digikam. Although the latest releases of Windows contains some useful picture management tools it is fairly basic.

GIMP stands for "GNU Image Manipulation Program", and is freely available for download. It is capable of doing most of the things that Photoshop does but does them differently because of constraints inflicted by software patenting. It works on Windows, MAC OS and Linux. The software, manual and tutorials can be found at GIMP - The GNU Image Manipulation Program.

Digikam is one of the most useful photographic software suites for organising your photos and is also free to download. It will take the photos from your camera and allow you to organise them in your own way with tagging etc.. It has its own light table facility for comparing photos side by side and a fairly comprehensive image management program, allowing you to work with most photographic needs. e.g. brightening up a shot, increasing the sharpness or changing it to monochrome - it even knows about how to reproduce the looks characterised by various B&W films of the past and present. When it comes to special reworking of a small area on an image then you need GIMP. There are also manuals, hints and tutorials to find on the Internet. Downloadable at digiKam - Photo Management Program | Manage your photographs as a professional with the power of Open Source. A handbook can be found at The digiKam Handbook

These 2 programs can be linked so that they work in harmony and they both work on Windows, MAC and Linux.

Not many budget cameras will survive dropping on rocks but for a budget camera I would look around for something second hand, that is sturdy and yet flexible. There are some real bargains to be had with cameras that are around 5+ years old that still produce good images, but are a fraction of the original price. If you are concerned about knocking the camera at all then you could use a suitably designed case that would protect the camera and allow ready access to it. The better the case is suited to the camera the better type of camera you can afford to carry. Longer zoom lenses (even built in lenses) tend to project a fair way from the camera and can easily be damaged, but if you can find an old small leather handbag to cut to shape and cover the lens while carrying it, it will help. However, I'm sure this will continue in one of the 'which camera should I buy' threads, if you pop a question up there.

Enjoy

Hey, I don't know if Americans are welcome here. I didn't realize that this site is based in Europe. I live in Pennsylvania, U.S.A. I hope a lot of the rugged cameras I saw on the links above are available in the U.S. Hehehe. Thanks for all the camera news links! Hopefully, I will find what I will need that is affordable for my limited budget. Can't wait to finish up editing my pics and post them on my gallery here!

Re: Hey, everyone!

USA here and I Don't plan on leaving anytime soon. This is the only site I visit, I do have an converted IR camera for flicker but not active. I like the honest replays an good active conversations that arise. Welcome, and have fun. As a side note, my father inlaw served in the navy for years and war times. He was one of their top photographers and couldn't hear. Very easy to talk too, so I don't see your disability as that big of a deal. I have two point and shoots I won't give up because they are such good camera's,,,talk it up and post a pick so we can have a little banter. Welcome again to Pixalo, world wide photography.

Hey, Boofers! What kind of point and shoots do you have? Have you done night photography with them. I mean, not just city lights. I am meaning serious night scenes without much lighting. Thanks! I don't let my deafness rule my life. It's not a tragedy. Yeah, it's a different adaptation to life as it is, pretty much. Hehehehe. Heck, I don't need hearing for photography!

Re: Hey, everyone!

Hi Firebrand, I started with an Olympus C-5050Z, it had an aperture wide open to f/1.8, something I'm sure you'll pick up later. We later looked at the Lumix and found the Leica D-Lux which made the lenses for the lumix for about the same price, it's a pocket camera. The Leica is the easiest one to use but the Oly will shoot low light. I shoot a lot of low light when the sun has or is about to
drop below the edge of the horizon. I have a dslr and use it most for the lenses but my bridge cameras "point and shoot" are just as good I think. If you want to look at new cameras, Fiji makes great bridge cameras. Google used cameras an take a look there,, places like KEH and B+H and B + M also sell refurbished cameras for good prices and they work good. I would stay away from Craig's list. You'll find a section here to, I've mailed to Ireland with no great strain.

Oh, cool! Thanks! Been looking for something durable and affordable that has a good aperture width for the night shots. Been trying to do that since I was a kid!!!!! Now, I'm 40 and still haven't gotten a good camera that could handle that! Hehehehe.
