I'm Geoff, just registered today. The site looks to be crammed with good stuff, looking forward to finding my way around it. I had long experience with film SLRs but my only experience with digital has been P&S. I'm yearning to get back to SLR and having tortured myself over the choice between Canon 400D and Nikon D80 I'm pretty well decided on the latter (I always did long for a Nikon!).

Hi Geoff - you are treading the same path as me. I bought a digital compact around 5 years ago after a lifetime of film, now got a D70s.

Best way to pick your new camera is to get a shortlist of cameras that have the spec you want, then handle them. I ended up with Canon v Nikon. Both would give more than acceptable preformance. When I got to handle them, I just preferred the Nikon control layout and the way it felt in use.

Thanks for your comments. Seems i'm following a similar path to yours. I too ended up with a choice between Canon 400D and Nikon 80D. I was recently on a business trip to Japan and had the opportunity to handle as many cameras and lenses as I liked in a great camera store in Tokyo. Like you I much preferred the feel and layout of the Nikon so that's what I plan to buy. Unfortunately the prices in japan were about the same as UK, don't know why they are cheaper in the US? I have posted a question in the cameras and lenses section (Nikon vs Sigma/Tamron) because I now have the dilemma over which lenses to choose!
