Hi Everyone! I'm a newbie from Ontario... i've been lurking a bit, and browsing through the amazing gallery.. and WOW!! Can't wait to learn some new tricks and tips!!

So far I don't have a 'great' camera... well.. I actually do.. we *just* bought a Rebel XTi but I keep getting that error 99, can't even take 1 picture, so it's going back and I think i'm going to splurge and get my dream camera.. Nikon D80.

I aspire to take pics like the ones I see in the gallery!! lol!! In time I hope!

Welcome to Pixalo, Wannabe.

It's often said that it's what (or rather who) is behind the camera rather than the camera itself that takes good photos... but if the camera isn't working at all, that certainly won't help!

I've only seen Error 99 occasionally on my 20D and each time it's gone away after I carefully cleaned the lens contacts. If you haven't tried remounting the lens and cleaning the contacts, I would try that first.

I've tried to redo the lens.. but didn't work.. I wouldn't know how to clean the contacts.. but shouldn't they already be clean since it was *just* bought?

I just meant rub the contacts on the lens gently with a soft clean cloth, to make sure there's no fingerprints or other nasties too subtle to be obvious but which might cause a problem with the contacts.

But you're right of course - it's a new camera and it should work as it's supposed to so you'd be well within your rights to just return it for a refund or replacement. Just a shame to go to that hassle if it might have been a bit of dust or fingerprint causing the trouble, that's all.
