Hi there, new member with Nikon D50, researching wide angle lens.

Currently investigating wide angle lens for real estate and interior design photography. Keen to see some shots from a Sigma 10-20mm lens if anyone has any, or any comments to add. Also using SB800 with Nikon D50 and wondering if I should get additional lighting for my interiors shoots. Have mainly done portrait shots for Hair Salons and Kids photography so far, so this is a new realm for me and unsure how best to equip myself. Have read the reviews on wide angle Nikor, Sigma, and a few others and Sigma sounds like good invest at this stage. would love to hear from someone who has used it or other nikon mount wide angle for real estate photos, not sure what to expect..any gallery's? thanks in advance for any replies, will keep checking. Hope to buy in next day or two. Cheers.

Re: Hi there, new member with Nikon D50, researching wide angle lens.

Hi Clare - welcome to Pixalo

As P-E said, I've just got a Sigma 10-20, and I think it is amazing! If you have a look in my albums, there are several shots taken in York with this lens. I have also got some images in the Sharing (National Rail Museum, York, More York, York Minster and Constantine, and Manipulation (River Ouse at Dusk) forums. Bear in mind that the ones inside York Minster and the National Rail Museum were hand-held at very low shutter speeds, so any softness is most likely due to camera shake.

Dave also has this lens and has got some shots in the galleries, and there are others who also use this lens and I'm sure they will add their comments.

I think it will be ideal for your use, but at the 10mm end there will be distortions as you will see from my shots. These can be corrected to an extent, but so far, I have found that the more corrections you apply, the more the image is cropped. There might be other ways of correcting with less loss, but I'm still researching this subject.

I think that at the 10mm end you might need to use two flashguns to get the coverage. The best bet is to go to a shop and try the lens on your camera. You will then be able to simulate your intended use and see if it fits the bill.

Re: Hi there, new member with Nikon D50, researching wide angle lens.

Thanx to everyone for your warm welcomes and suggestions, I'm off shopping tomorrow, tracking down the Sigma 10-20mm. Am rather curious though, if there is obvious distortion at 10mm, and I have heard this before, why is it offered, bit like a cars speedo going up to 260klms...who's gonna safely use it anyway!!
Will keep you posted.

Re: Hi there, new member with Nikon D50, researching wide angle lens.

I have used the D50 nikon with a wide angle tokina lense 2.8 20-35mm and this does great especially indoors without the SB800. One of my professions since 1981 has
been that of a real estate broker...

Are there any guidelines you have to adhere to re maximum wide angle lens you can use ? Reason I ask, is due to the fact some serious wide angle lenses (eg 10-15mm) can give an impression that a room is much more open than it is in real life. Almost a case of mis-selling ?
