my head is crushed

Hello,

I have a hitachi & hdc-646e camera 6mp camera that I'm very happy with ...until my 6 six old son was chasing my 3 year old daughter on a beach near North Berwick with watergun in hand ....can you see what's coming next?

Yep, a pit-stop of chasing his sister seemed a good idea when he thought that daddy sitting on the beach trying to capture the kodak (sorry hitachi) moment:

He came, he saw and he blasted me right in the kisser...although the photo of it is quite good - my camera didn't seem to appreciate the incident.

RESULT
- my camera at first didn't want to open and shut its little black shutters
- then the prodtruding part didn't retract
- the message error 2 now comes up on the camera
- the camera lets me view the pictures on the memory card - but isn't up for normal camera taking duties

HELP - can anybody suggest what I should do - repair it? clean it? take it to Jessops or somewhere? or buy another one?

Any help would be much appreciated.

many thanks
Alan

Re: my head is crushed

to be honest if it still isnt working after drying out properly i would be inclinced to buy a new one cos the price you will be charged for having it repaired will more than likely be more than the price of buying a similar camera.

Re: my head is crushed

Sorry to hear about your bad luck.

I was in Jessops today and overhead someone asking the staff if they repaired cameras.
Yes was the reply but it isn't cheap. We send the camera back to the manufacturer and prices start from 80 quid for basic faults.

I'd be inclined to purchase a similar camera as well although that's probably just what you didn't want to hear.

Welcome to Pixalo from it's second newest member after you. If you do decide to get a new camera try cameras2u or a similar respected Photographic web sites instead of Jessops for your new camera. I bought a UV filter from them this morning at 29 quid and found the same one online for 10 quid cheaper. Jessops in my opinion are like PC World and prey on 'Joe Publics' ignorance of prices.

Dan

I'd remove the battery and leave the camera in your airing cupboard for a couple of days with all of the things that open, open.

When it is thoroughly dry it will either work, or not. Either way, you will know what to do!

Thanks for the heads up on Jessops Dan that's saved me a trek to the shops.

And that's top notch advice dabhand16 I'll certainly give that a try right now - thanks very much.

Hi Alan, I can't really add any advice to what's already been given, so I'll just say... it's good to have you at Pixalo!

Worth remembering that Cameras2u is owned by Jessops, so you're getting a cheaper price which is great but if you don't like Jessops you may not want to be putting cash in their pockets at all.

Personally, I don't like the way they bought up all the independants in the area, replaced most of the knowledgeable staff and then finally closed most of the stores. It's a lot harder to go shopping for cameras in Leeds now.

The suggestion about the airing cupboard is spot on, give it a try you could save yourself having to spend anything at all.

cheers

Dan

Talking of which, shopping4cameras.com is also owned by Jessops.

Just to agree with everyone else , if the airing cupboard doesn't work then a new camera is probably the best bet. Look also at Warehouse Express - they're usually competitive.

shopping4cameras just redirects to cameras4u now, but you're right Jessops used to run both sites seperately.

Warehouse Express are good, Karlu are pretty good too. Quite a few people on here are happy with Onestop Digital but I've never used them myself.

cheers

Re: my head is crushed

Onestop is fine for lenses etc, but since they're based in HK I'd watch for warranty validity on cameras. Some manufacturers (e.g. Canon) have regional warranties, and I'm not sure how OneStop deal with this. I've heard no complaints about them. Kerso is another one to look at.

AFAIK

Nikon gear is worldwide warranties unless you buy from the USA - then it's North America only.

Sigma is regional.
