Nearly a Noob

After quite a few months reading this forum and considering whether to purchase a DSLR (ie justifying the cost in my mind) I finally made the jump and purchased a Nikon D80 with 2 lens (tamarons) lowepro slingshot 300 bag
I am a complete beginner, so I am just getting my head around the terminology at the moment.
things I have managed so far (2 days)
Charge the battery
load and format the 2gb card
learn how to fit the UV filters on the lens
Fit the lens to the camera and remove.
Format the date and time on the camera
take some photo's in jpeg on auto settings, download onto pc
Take some photo's in NEF and found a converter I am not too keen on picture project as it wont let me save my photo's when in NEF to modify in adobe 7. found a new program flexPhotoDB which does.
used one of the tutorials on here to add a border around my photo's, Can't get my signature on though.
I realise I have a long way to go but at least I can now take photo's. I have tried some of the vari programmes on the camera but need to start learning how to take some shots in manual.
I have a few digital photography books to use for information plus a relative who is a very keen digital photographer, unfortunately he is very old and in hospital at the moment.
So it looks like it will be late nights, frustration, tears, joy etc and a very long journey but hopefully worthwhile.
I am off around the Alps (French, Swiss,Germany, Italian) South of France, Austrian Tirol, Italy at the end of June on a car driving holiday so I should get some good photo opportunities.
