Welcome, the Nikon Canon debate is an old and bitter one at times, i would suggest going and handling both in a shop, see which you feel more comofrtable with, read some reviews, there are several members with either on here so they will certainly pipe up

I thought I'd ask the forum as I'm going bog eyed reading the reviews. Go on then, which 1 are you?? I'm from Manchester , so I can relate to your gallery. Just returned from a site seeing tour of London and Egypt (god i hate being a tourist) and everyone in London had Canon, speaks volumes to me.. |

To be honest and impartial (I own neither, but I do own your cam's big brother, FZ30)
There isn't a lot to tell in the picture quality. You'll notice a massive step up in both image quality and complexity, but I think the rest is down to ergonomics and the availability of accessories etc. I think canon just about edge it on the accessories front as there are more canon users at pro/am level, and therefore the kit tends to a smidge cheaper and easier to get hold of. nikon for build quality. I've handled both as a couple of my friend own them and to my mind I prefered the Nikon. But as above really, get to a shop and have a play, no shop manager is gonna deny a potential customer the chance to try the wares! Oh, and welcome to the forum. It's good here! |

Welcome!
![]() The Canon/Nikon argument is as old as the hills. Both are superb bits of kit-end of. ![]() Have a look around, I'm sure you'll get plenty of ideas for fresh inspiration. |

Welcome to the forums.
The Canon / Nikon thing is purely a personal thing I would have thought. They are both perfectly capable of producing some stunning shots, so it's really down to personal preference I think. |

Welcome to the forums from an ex Manchester boy
![]() That's a great opening question and one that luckily here you will receive a balanced view. We have many owners of both camera's here and for good reason, they are both excellent and will return stunning results once you have learned the basics…we can help with that too ![]() The best advice is simply to look at both and get your mitts on them, one might look better in pictures but when you come to handle it it may not feel right, and since it will be you using it that is the most important thing. The other thing to be aware of is that you buying into a manufacturer and their accessories too, that means lenses, flash guns, grips, etc..you are not just buying a body. In fact it is likely that the first thing you will change will be the body. If you buy Canon you can't use Nikon lenses etc and vice versa so its also a good idea to have a look at what each manufacturer offers and their prices. HTH

Hi Picsmad,
I'm another canon bod and have been since before the days of EOS. If I was starting out again I think canon would be the more sensible choice just based on cost and availabilty of all the other bits you'll end up buying over the years. However, IF I really was chosing a new kit from scratch I'd be more likley to want a Nikon just because it's less common. ![]() |

Hi!
I chose Canon because I had an IXUS point and shoot before so I was comfortable with the menus and controls. |

Hi there.
Started as Canon 300D user but found cost for decent zoom to replace mediocre kit lens too much. Worked out cheaper to sell & buy s/h Nikon D70 with excellent 18-70 kit lens & then upgrade firmaware for free to D70s level ![]() ![]() |

Hi picsmad, welcome to TPF.
I have a 350D, and really only have two criticisms. However, before I go into those, my reason for buying the 350D was purely based on the reviews I had seen comparing it to the D70 (the D70s was not out at the time), and for the most part the 350D seemed to be the reviewers favourite. Now onto my criticisms: Firstly the size, Since I was an idiot and bought online without actually holding each camera, I didn't realise the physical size of the 350D was going to be a problem. I didn't think I had overly large hands and the reviews all said that people with medium hands wouldn't have a problem - so I bought it. Unfortunately, I was wrong. The size is such that I could only hold the camera with my little finger and part of my ring finger overhanging the bottom of the camera - this made holding the camera steady a fairly difficult task. However, since I bought the BG-E3 battery grip, the size is no longer an issue. The grip adds the size and balance I think the 350D should have had to start with. At £100 it isn't a cheap fix so to speak, but is a worthwhile investment for the reasons stated above, but also for the fact that you can have 2 batteries, and storage permitting, you double your picture time in between recharges. My second criticism of the camera is the rear screen. Many is the time I have looked at the screen and thought I had a good picture, only to find when I got home that the picture was not as good as I hoped - either I had camera shake blur or my focussing was not quite right or something similar. Only when I put the picture on my PC can I really tell whether the shot has worked or not. This doesn't happen so much now that I have a good walkabout lens with IS, but even so, I still take a few extra pictures after I think I have a "good shot" to make sure I have one I like.

I started out with a Nikon F65 film camera, based on feel as it was the same price as the equivalent Canon. When I wanted to go digital, the obvious thing was to get the D70 because I already had Nikon hardware. Anyway, all the comparative reviews said that the D70 was better than the 300D...

welcome
![]() a rare nikon user again here. d70 was the one for me, i switched from the old canon eos 600 becuase i preferred the ergonomics and the build quality of the d70 over the 350d, if i had the money i'd happily own a 20d tho. infact ive seen a few reviews comparing the d70 and the 20d and they were pretty equal... not too sure on that myself but hey, i was pleased. can't go wrong either way, as has been said before, go and try them then decide what feels better ![]() |

HI, As a 350d User i'd definitely agree with Braedon on both points. Frankly I was getting really bad cramp in the "bottom" half of my hand until bruv bought me the bg-e3 battery grip, It really changed the whole feel of the thing and I suspect that you wouldn't spot this on an initial handling. And the rear screen is useless for deciding if a shot is in focus, Although this seems equally true for higher range canons. I know nothing about the nikons image quality, Which, when it comes down to it is the most important question but I am extremely happy with the shots i've taken on the 350d and would recommend it to anyone so long as they get the extra battery grip, Or their bruv buys them it of course

Welcome to the forums Picsmad.
I switched from Fuji/Nikon to Canon a couple of years ago as there was nothing in the Nikon armoury that suited my photography needs. Nikon now have kit that would suit my type of photography and I would be quite happy with some of the kit they have available. What I'm trying to say here is choose wisely, if you make the wrong choice to begin with, it can be costly to make the switch later on. Choose the right tool for the job. Good luck. |
