Welcome, the Nikon Canon debate is an old and bitter one at times, i would suggest going and handling both in a shop, see which you feel more comofrtable with, read some reviews, there are several members with either on here so they will certainly pipe up

Cheers fot that.
I thought I'd ask the forum as I'm going bog eyed reading the reviews. Go on then, which 1 are you?? I'm from Manchester , so I can relate to your gallery. Just returned from a site seeing tour of London and Egypt (god i hate being a tourist) and everyone in London had Canon, speaks volumes to me.. |

To be honest and impartial (I own neither, but I do own your cam's big brother, FZ30)
There isn't a lot to tell in the picture quality. You'll notice a massive step up in both image quality and complexity, but I think the rest is down to ergonomics and the availability of accessories etc. I think canon just about edge it on the accessories front as there are more canon users at pro/am level, and therefore the kit tends to a smidge cheaper and easier to get hold of. nikon for build quality. I've handled both as a couple of my friend own them and to my mind I prefered the Nikon. But as above really, get to a shop and have a play, no shop manager is gonna deny a potential customer the chance to try the wares! Oh, and welcome to the forum. It's good here! |

Welcome!
![]() The Canon/Nikon argument is as old as the hills. Both are superb bits of kit-end of. ![]() Have a look around, I'm sure you'll get plenty of ideas for fresh inspiration. |

Welcome to the forums.
The Canon / Nikon thing is purely a personal thing I would have thought. They are both perfectly capable of producing some stunning shots, so it's really down to personal preference I think. |

Welcome to the forums from an ex Manchester boy
That's a great opening question and one that luckily here you will receive a balanced view. We have many owners of both camera's here and for good reason, they are both excellent and will return stunning results once you have learned the basics…we can help with that too ![]() The best advice is simply to look at both and get your mitts on them, one might look better in pictures but when you come to handle it it may not feel right, and since it will be you using it that is the most important thing. The other thing to be aware of is that you buying into a manufacturer and their accessories too, that means lenses, flash guns, grips, etc..you are not just buying a body. In fact it is likely that the first thing you will change will be the body. If you buy Canon you can't use Nikon lenses etc and vice versa so its also a good idea to have a look at what each manufacturer offers and their prices. HTH

I got into photography the same way as you, when my Mrs told me I was wasted...I was...I'd just drunk a bottle of Jack Daniels and bought a 350d online with my credit card. |

Hi Picsmad,
I'm another canon bod and have been since before the days of EOS. If I was starting out again I think canon would be the more sensible choice just based on cost and availabilty of all the other bits you'll end up buying over the years. However, IF I really was chosing a new kit from scratch I'd be more likley to want a Nikon just because it's less common.
