Newbee

Hi. I am a keen student photographer hoping to learn from the members of this site and pass on what I can to anybody I can help. I was prompted to look for advice on looking for best way to photograph at gigs as I am useless in poor lighting and have a photo pass for the drifters Tuesday night. I have just been playing with my nikkor 60mm 2.8 and I can't seem to get the aperture to open up past 3.3... Any tips on how to fix this and get a good photo on Tuesday?

Welcome to Pixalo Sally

We have some members who do Gig photography and you might find these threads of interest:

With regard to your lens, Have you tried to set 2.8 in aperture priority and manual modes? Presuming it is the D lens, is the aperture ring set at f22 and have you set the locking switch?

Re: Newbee

Hmm, this is where I beome unstuck I think. By the aperture ring.., is this the movable part of the lens closest to the body with the f stop numbers? I know that sounds right, but when I turn the ring off of 32 the next groove it will slot into is between 16 and 22 and regardless, when i come off from 32 I just get EE. Am I missing the obvious? Yes, it is the D lens. I really appreciate this and thanks, it's enough to drive ya mad. Oh and yes, I have tried stopping down in both aperture and manual.

Re: Newbee

Sorry - did not realise the 60mm went down to f32 - I should have said is the aperture ring set and locked into the smallest aperture.

Is the lens set to manual or auto? Sounds like the camera is not connecting with the lens properly. Might be worth moving the switch back and forth a couple of times. Do you have other lenses that work OK, and can you try the 60mm on a different body? With the lens set to manual, you should be able to stop down using the aperture ring you have identified.

You can try very carefully cleaning the contacts on the camera and the lens with some pure alcohol and a clean pencil eraser.

Re: Newbee

I will take both the body and lens into college today and see what sense can be made of it there. There are other bodies I can test the lens on there. I will update this with any news. Thank you!

Re: Newbee

Hi Sally,

Welcome to Pixalo. My instincts tell me the same as what Graham said too, to move the aperture ring manually to the smallest aperture, the camera should then be able to control the aperture across the entire aperture range.

Have fun!

cheers, Raymond

Re: Newbee

Hi, got it! It seems with this lens, manually, with aperture set to f32 on the adapter ring: this lens opens up to a maximum of f3.3 in macro mode which it switches to when focusing on a distance of a few feet or less...*deep breath*...and a maximum of f2.8 when focusing on a subject beyond. Thanks Dabhand16 and hanra for the advice. jasondh, love the song too. P-E, Deeno
