Thank you, thank you, thank you...

I have been a member of Pixalo for only five weeks and have received more useable help in that time than in years of membership in Experts Exchange (where I pay $99 a year).

You have helped me with my naive newbie questions and my technical questions.

I live in the high desert of southern California. It is discouraging when you canít find a solution to a problem; there is no one to ask for help. We donít even have a camera store. Pixalo members have been a wonderful help.

I have only begun to explore your site. I can tell there are more dimensions to Pixalo than the forums. I look foreword to discovering the rest of Pixalo.

I am a writer working on becoming a craftsman in woodworking and photography. As you might guess, I am writing my first woodworking articles and illustrating them with (mostly close-up) photographs.

I use a Nikon N90 some and a Nikon D80 a lot. I love my Canon S1 IS and came to be more dependant on its image stabilization than I realized until I bought (last month) my D80. I am saving my pennies (it takes lots and lots of them) for a Nikon VR lens (Vibration Reduction, Nikonís image stabilization).

I am new to digital close-up/macro photography and enjoyed the freedom of the Canon S1 IS to take sharp handheld close-ups. My Nikon D80 just captures fuzzy stuff unless I have so much light my wood starts to burn. From what I read, the VR lenses do work.

Again, thank you, Pixalo members.

Doug

Glad to hear that we've helped, Doug!

To prevent that wood all burning up maybe use a tripod - fire fighting will then be a new use for one!

Re: Thank you, thank you, thank you...

Doug - thanks for taking the time to post that huge complement

We are really pleased that you have found the site so helpful, and that is entirely due to our members. We are so fortunate to have such a diverse and knowledgeable bunch of people who enjoy helping each other regardless of their degree of proficiency. No-one knows everything, but we all know something.

Doing close-up work is tricky, as you have discovered! The closer you get, the more that various issues like camera shake are magnified. You have identified one way of overcoming this by considering lenses with VR, but have you considered using a tripod with a ball-head and a prime lens with macro capability? This may work out cheaper, and because the lens might be more suitable for the use you want it for, the results may be better.

There are lots of good lenses that will do the job in the 60-105mm range, and the Sigma and Tamron lenses of this type get good press and are often much cheaper than the camera makers lenses. They will also be faster than the zoom lenses, so will need less light to get the shots.

From what you have said, I guess you don't have too many neighbours, but in case you see someone wandering through your part of California, don't forget to tell them about us!!

Re: Thank you, thank you, thank you...

thats a lovely long intro and compliment to all of us members and crew alike.
I think of pixalo as my number one resource both for good honest critique and help and hints for all types of things. They havent failed me yet!

Hopefully we can all share more knowledge and resources in the future and watch the site grew even more essential to more and more photographers!
