Boris

We have 2 badger sets on land that is incorporated into the garden, and they come down from the woodland to the house every night to be fed and have done for well over twenty years.

This badger we have named crafty Borris, and he loves to visit us anytime of the day winter or summer, but he does not realize what the word nocturnal means!
Crafty is used because he knows all the tricks in the book in how and where to get hold of any Goodies that are put out during the day at the two feeding stations set up solely for the birds that visit the garden, and there are many different varieties of birds that use them, at each of the two feeding stations, we also have a ground feeder, made of 2" inch galvanised steel mesh, made into 2ft square boxes that sit on the ground so that the smaller birds are guaranteed a feed without the larger birds devouring the lot, in there, we put a seed mixture suitable for finches nuthatches robins and tits etc, with a good helping of sunflower hearts along with kibbled peanuts to keep everyone happy, but, there is one problem, crafty Borris, who's eye site is not very good, but his sense of smell more than makes up for that, because where ever we put the ground feeders, crafty Borris's nose will home in on them, and when he finds them, with one swift sideswipe of his head he bowls the ground feeder's over, leaving all the contents to his mercy, but it never fails to bring a snigger and a smile to our faces!!

This one is about 200ft from the house at the rear.

These 2 are near the side door of the house on a very wet morning.

Re: Boris

Many thanks, Chris, they come down to the door every night, my wife makes them jam and peanut butter sandwiches and also saves any leftovers such as cheese and any meat products including cat food etc, and I scatter peanuts over the feeding area for them and have done for many years now, the only time they have failed to turn up for their nightly feed is when we have had a heavy snow fall.

The photo below was taken some time ago but is unusual because they usually have one two or three cubs, but this particular year one pair of the badgers had 4 cubs and I was lucky enough to get a shot of them all.
I very rarely take shots of them because I don't want to upset and frighten them with the flash of the camera at night.

Thanks, Hal, yes we see them every night because they are only a few feet from the windows where we feed them, they come down in dribs and drabs, sometimes just one on its own and then a little later we may get 2 or 3 all at once, they usually start coming down to feed as soon as it's dark.
When we are away on holiday we have a near neighbour who is as passionate about wildlife as I am, who takes over the duty of feeding them including the cutting and making the sandwiches, his wife tells me that when he is on Badger duty he goes out before dusk and very rarely comes home before midnight because he sits watching and waiting to see them, apparently when he finds out that we will be away from home again, his eyes light up lol
