Well to be absolutely honest, the bird looks a little bit on the soft side. Whether that’s due to being hand held or not, I don’t know.

F6.3 at 1/800th should have frozen just about any movement, it looks very soft to me.

What strikes me is there doesn't seem to be a point of focus.

You can tweak it and do a fair inprovement.

Birds are a devil to shoot though

Re: Sima 150 500 took out

I have one of these lenses and yes you can hand hold it at 500mm and f 6.3 but based on my experience you should expect a lot of slightly blurred images. I guess that you were quite close to that Chaffinch and if so the depth of field at 500 mm / f 6.3 is going to be very shallow as well and that does not help with the overall impression of sharpness. Again from what I have done with a tripod it is fine.

Just out of curiosity what sharpening tool did you use. It has made a great improvement to the original

Re: Sima 150 500 took out

AQ

I use a little technique a friend taught me that goes a tad further than a single tool.

Firstly I use photo shop, I convert the photograph to LAB COLOUR, then choose the LIGHTNESS CHANEL.

I use UNSHARP MASK on that Chanel only, set to somewhere between 150 - 300 strength 0.5 pixels radius and threshold of zero.

I then covert it back to RGB.

That way I add sharpness without loss of colour, and it also stops that halo you get with heavy sharpening,

This photograph was a difficult capture and had to be given the same treatment

If only to show that there's always a multitude of ways to achieve a result in image editing:

Whilst not a great supporter of 3rd party filters, Nik Software's Sharpener does allow some nice control of the image, whether RAW, output or both

The original does look very soft, have you done some test shots on a tripod to check it out, just in case there is a problem with the lens?

From reviews, it appears that the quality may drop off @300mm unless you peg it back a stop or two. Was interesting that a few suggested it produced better shots than the Canon 100-400mm, albeit at F/8 or smaller

Because the pics are still good! Just that they're better at less than max zoom (unsurprisingly - and the Canon 100-400mm is the same)

Personally, having read quite a few reviews, if one of these lenses came my way at a reasonable price (and I knew it's history) I'd be very tempted (and I use the Canon 100-400 - but for that extra 100mm......... )

Re: Sima 150 500 took out

I did question the OP, as I've seen shots from this lens at 500mm and they have been very sharp, but the shots on here are softer than I would have expected.
I've also got the 100-400 and was tempted a couple last year to change it for the extra 100mm after seeing other shots, but my lens is pin sharp, so keeping it.
I would still test the lens and if not sharp send back or send to be checked. I had a softness problem with a 70-200 f4 IS USM and sent it back to Canon, pin sharp when it came back. If it's come through the post, it could have been knocked.

Des. have a look at the bird pictures from Trinidad in my gallery. They were all taken with this lens, hand held and would have been at or very close to the 500 mm. end as I wanted them as large as possible in the frame.

I have the same lens and find that if i use it at 6.3 at 500mm it is soft. You should try f8 or higher. [IMG][/IMG]This chaffinch was taken at 500mm, f8, iso 400.

Re: Sima 150 500 took out

Like the entire thread and the shot that started it. Mark's comment parallels my experience with the Sigma 50-500 and the reading I've done about both the 50-500 and 150-500. My 50-500 starts getting good at f7.1 and can be shockingly good at f8 at 500mm if conditions are favorable, ie. lots of light. That's alway handheld with in-body IS. On a tripod for someone less amateurish than I am, either lens should produce truly good shots especially for their cost. There is a learning curve involved with that much reach, but a few outings and it becomes enjoyable.

Re: Sima 150 500 took out

The original shot looks like there's been some smoothing applied and then some local sharpness around the head. I just don't think it works.

I've owned the 150-500mm OS and it is capable of excellent results. Like all these mid range long lenses, most of which I've also owned at one time or another, they are really only going to perform consistently decent stopped down at the longer end. The view that this lens only works at 300mm is nonesense. It just needs to be used correctly. When it is, and assuming good copies, then at f8.0, like the 50-500mm, it ranks alongside the Canon 100-400mm IS L IQ wise ... and the OS is better than the IS. Probably the best bang per buck long zoom at the moment.
