Dear Pimper -

I am just looking for general guidance on improving this photo. I think I made some good changes when I learned about GIMP (you can see the original in my gallery), but every time I size it for Pixalo it gets so blurry. Also, I am hoping to sharpen the outline of the light set.

Here you go Robbo. I have sharpened up the silhouette on the right for you.

The method I used is as follows:

Use the magic wand to select the sihouette. Modify the selection by contracting it by one pixel and invert the selection (Ctrl+shift+I) so that the sky is selected instead of the silhouette.

Now clone the sky up to the selection line so that it gets rid of the blurred outline. This now looks sharp but is a bit smaller than it was, so...

Now invert the selection again and modify the selection by expanding it one pixel.

Now clone inside the silhouette darkness up to the edge again. You now have the same size silhouette as before but with sharp outline.

Hope that is what you were after.

Cheers,
Rob

Rob,

Congrats on the Member of the month! Secondly, I really appreciate you taking time to work on this photo. It has been a while since I posted this and just happen to check my gallery for another reason. I'm glad I didn't let this go unchecked for too long! There is a lot of info and many skills in your post that I need to learn (and find them in GIMP). I 'll get to it.

You have always taken time to help me out and I really appreciate it. I have been a little light on the chances to shoot, but was curious if you are seeing any improvement in my shots over this small sample? I know this puts you in an awkward position, but you appear to be very honest and willing to make the tough comments to help someone improve. I need that.
