Lovely image Angela but it needs a bit more space on the right hand side for the horse to look into. In ps go to Image>canvas size & add to the right, take a colour sample from the dark background & fill the new canvas

Thank you very much Toonie! I'm still finding my way round this manipulation lark so I do appreciate the comments!

Does that look better?

One thing worth trying is to add some noise/grain to the black area, to make it feel a more natural flow from horse to background . Currently the black is too clinical.

Yes Angela, much better. you could also try extending the canvas by about 50 > 60% to the right plus about 10% on the top, It gives you another different image to play about with. The Possibilities are endless. There are some lovely tones in the image.

Dave, I did try adding some noise to the background but it just looked awful! I think perhaps I added to much but no matter what I did I just couldn't seem to get it right. Any tips please?

OK, even after adding noise it still wasn't working, so abandoned that idea. What I realised is the horse shot is quite pale versus the deep black. So added an S curve & basically clicked a tiny way on the line from bottom left ( point 20 actually) & then dragged it to the bottom. This has the effect of darkening all the shadow detail, so it's simalar to background. I then also used the "blur" tool set at 50% & soft brush of 15 pixels & wend around outline of horse to slightly soften it & make it seem more natural. End result is here (pardon image quality, I saved at 30% by mistake) :-

Once I started I thought I would play a bit futher. Tried to add false shodwing to edge of horse outline by :-

- Duplicating layer

- Adding S curve dragging point 100 downwards until I got the shadows I was after

- The use layer mask to bring back the parts of the horse I could imagine being lit.

- Slight USM & voila :-

Not perfect , but hopefully a few pointers for future processing
