been playing with it a bit in CS3, the quality is really not the best, I've used LUCIS ART plugin in order to bring some details back, some levels tweaks, dodge and burn tool, hope it helped

Had a play in Elements 5

Converted to greyscale.
Then re-mapped using the gradient adjustment tool.
In CS Curves would be easier to use but I don't have CS (yet) so I improvise with the gradient tool.
It still needs a bit of work to remove spots.

Thank you DavetheRave and Bill too, I really appreciate you taking the time. Some definite improvments on the original so will try out a few of the suggestions and see if I can replicate.

Had a play with my trusted Micrografx Picture Publisher,but any Adobe or serif etc will do the job. Just experiment and "Save as" and call it something different. so you keep the original.
