I haved used a 100mm 2.8 macro for about 4 months, and relate to the difference for focus or DOF. I'm a late bloomer, I only use the tripod or mono pod once in awhile. The free handing seems to speed up the feel for the lens, it's been fun and I always fall back on taking pictures of flowers while searching for "BUGS". My columbines have just now started to show as I really love the centers of these beauties.
