Well that background was a nightmare to deal with....so i got rid of it You did want dark didn't you 

Basically applied strong S curve to get contrast I was after. Then duplicated layer & painted black over background & over edge of horse. Then used layer mask to bring edges back clean. Finally painted black at 10% opacity over edges to smooth the transition from black to horse/rider.
Looking at it now, it needs a bit more blending on some of the edges, but you get the idea 
Now if you can suss this process & take more time than I did, I reckon these kind of shots would looking the biz on a big canvas on the wall

I thought perhaps adding a spot light (fitlters, render, lighting effects in PS) on just the horse and rider while adding various black gradient to the background would give the effect you where asking for.
By the way on the other version you said you used filter called Midnight Sepia where did you get it and can it be used in ps I really like the effect.
