Description: For anyone seeking a high quality telephoto zoom lens for portraits and action photography at a very affordable price, this new Nikkor extends great performance and excellent value.

This very compact telephoto zoom lens is fully compatible with the newly introduced Nikon N65 as well as Nikon's Professional D-series Digital SLR, 35mm Professional F5, F100, N80, N75 and Advanced Photo System Pronea cameras. Compact and lightweight, with a comfortable, well-balanced feel, the 4.3x zoom lens is ideal for candid shots, portraits, travel and sports photography.

A key design element considered that the newest Nikon SLR models have built-in aperture control (via the Command Dial), and therefore do not require that the lens have an aperture control ring. With this point in mind, the G lenses omit the aperture ring, resulting a lighter and more compact lens.

Key Features

1. 9-Blade rounded diaphragm for natural blur
2. Provides distance information to AF Nikon cameras
3. Both silver and black versions availabl

Pros: Extremely cheap, optical quality good for price
Cons: Built to a budget, feels cheap. Slow hesitant AF in poor light

Bought this from a neighbour who just couldn't get on with this lens.

First impressions are it feels cheap & could easily break. But you have to take into account you can buy this new for as little as £71 incl P&P !!!!

Haven't had a great amount of use out of it, but did compare it to the discontinued 70-210 D lens I have. Compared to this the focusing in very slow & can be hesitant in poorer light. On a plus though I took comaprision shots side by side & there's very little difference in resulting PQ.

If you are on a tight budget, or not sure if you need a focal range of this lens, then it's worth a serious look.

Note I have listed the new price I could purchase lens for at time, instead of the 2nd hand price I paid

Pros: Cheap & cheerful
Cons: Lens cap never seems to stay on

Good starters lens , with good range. Is not as well made as kit lens, but then costs half the amount. Only problem I have had is the lens cap comes off which is annoying. Luckily I have a filter fitted.

Pros: Very cheap
Cons: A tad soft, a tad slow, a tad noisy.

I actually like this lens. I've been fortunate in that I've not been spoiled by uber expensive glass so don't really have anything concrete to compare it with. More importantly I don't see any imperfections which may be more apparent to those with more experience.

1) Focus Speed.
This can be rather slow when focussing from distance to close up. Possibly this is just a function of the range it has to focus across.
More irritatingly if there isn't much contrast between the subject and background or they blend together then focussing can be non-existant.

2) Focus Noise
The lens I have is actually quite noisy when focussing. I don't know if they are all like that or it's just mine.

3) Image Sharpness
At max aperture there is a certain softness to the image. I've attached an image to illustate the softness at different apertures.

These are 100% crops taken from the centre of the image.

So this softness is going to be the biggest problem with the lens. It'll require either a smaller aperture which in turn means a bright day, higher ISO (and therfore more noise) or a lot of post processing to get best results.
However I'm given to understand all lenses display this type of problem and it's just a matter of degrees. You can view the image above yourself and decide if you can live with it or not.

4) Build Quality
I actually like the fact that it's plastic and therfor light. Given I have to carry it around it's better to me that it's doesn't weigh very much.
Sure it's probably not the strongest if you drop it (as I can testify with another of Nikons plastic lenses) but then again, you are not supposed to drop it

5) Chromatic Abberation (Purple Fringing)
Surprisingly, unlike all my other lenses, I haven't notice any CA on this lens at all.

Summary
In my opinion this makes this lens an excellent beginners tool. It won't break the bank and if you're not a pixel peeper then you will probably never notice it's shortcomings.
