This is the perfect lens for those wanting to have a go at macro photography.
The focal length is long enough for most subjects (much better than the 50mm or 60mm macro lenses that are available). For insects, it is almost adequate - but I would consder the 180mm version instead.
It's very sharp indeed.
I think it is only bettered by the Canon 100mm macro, and possibly the Nikon 105mm. However, both of those are more expensive.

I love this lens and it has given me an affordable way to venture into macro photography. The images produced are nothing short of spectacular. It offers a very versatile focal length suitable for almost any type of macro photography you would wish to do. The AF leaves a lot to be desired, it is slow and often cannot focus at all. Don't let this deter you if you just want to use this lens solely for macro, as you will be using manual focus most of the time. If however you want something to double up as a telephoto lens then opt for the more expensive canon (or nikon) equivalent.

Good for portraits aswell as Macro, f/2.8

Bought this lens primarily for portrait work. Image quality is good, although the AF can hunt a little in low light (eg. Studio Shoots).
Had a quick dabble at macro, where the lens performed extremely well. Just a shame my macro patience isn't adequate for the lens
