Wide primes are being superseded by wide zooms so I grabbed a copy while they still exist.
This is a good solid lens, metal throughout, that has a nice smooth focus ring. I use it in manual most of the time so appreciate the feel and operation of it.
The lens has a built in petal hood, which it needs, and a clever split lens cap which can be left on partially to extend the hood, which it also often needs. Flare is a big problem with the lens due to the enormous front element. Sadly leaving on the extended hood results in dark corners to shots, even on a 1.6 crop camera.
The front element is another drawback - it looks like a tennis ball cut in half and stuck on the front - unavoidable with such a wide prime but my gosh does it make you constantly wary of hazards to the lens instead of concentrating on taking pictures. I tend not to worry about knocks and scrapes on my gear so this is a very strange situation for me.
I say I'd recommend it, I think optically its much the same as any good wide zoom or prime out there. Nice and sharp, distortion is minimal, 8 inch closest focusing is good for odd photos. As long as you get something along these lines you'll be happy.
