This has the same optical system, construction, and exterior design as the EF 28-80mm f/3.5-5.6 IV USM lens. Instead of having a USM, it has a micro motor. This lens can cover all commonly used focal lenths from wide-angle 28mm to medium-telephoto 80mm.

Got this lens off Ebay just after I bought my 350D as a cheap additional lens until I could afford something better - only cost £25, and for that price it was a bargain. Must admit that it rarely gets used these days and is sitting as a spare.
Its plastic thought out which is a negative, however it is a lens aimed at the cheaper end of the market so what can you expect, its never caused me any problems yet, however I wouldnt like to drop it - a positive of this however is that the lens is very light, weighing about the same as the 18-55mm kit lens.
Focusing is a little slow and whines a little, not being USM. Also it does not have full-time manual focusing, so you must flick the switch if you wish to use this in manual.
Results are not that bad, its obviously going to suffer in low-light due to its apertures, but it can still deliver images that are comparable to the kit lens - not the best, but perfectly useable in all but the most critical of situations.
One problem that I have noticed is that when using the onboard flash it seems to have a tendency to over expose a little so maybe this lens doesnt meter as accurately as it should, but that maybe a fault in how I have applied this lens.
For the price this cost me it was a bargain, and as an early start to a lens collection I think you could do worse.
