Description:
|
The Speedlite 430EX improves on many specifications of its predecessor, the 420EX and includes new features to maximise digital image quality when using a flash. These include automatic selection of camera white balance settings, and auto-adjustment of the zoom flash position to match the sensor size of the camera to which the unit is attached. The Speedlite 430EX has increased its guide number to 43 (m/ISO 100 at 105mm), and has approximately 40% faster recycling time than the Speedlite 420EX.
An ultra-bright 2-LED configuration focus assist-beam has been designed to be compatible with all focus points within the frame of all EOS AF systems, up to 9-point AF.

Pros:
|
custom functions,power,energy saving mode,flexible,slave function
|
|
Cons:
|
requires 4 AA batteries, still needs some time to recharge

It is a great flash. The head is flexible, you can use it as a slave flash (you still need a master),it has a few custom functions, you can make a lot of settings(playing with it in manual mode is a real pleasure). It has also a energy saving mode, sometimes very good, but you still need 4 AA batteries. The flash is able to calculate the power it needs depending on the lens(works only with a few). The most unpleasant characteristic is the time it needs to recharge(doesn't matter in a studio, but it does matter for a live report for example). In it's price range it offers a lot,it is a very well built device which can adjust to your requirements very easy.

I made the mistake of using a 580EX before purchasing this one. The 580 was more powerful and more intelligent. While the 430 is seemingly more simplistic than the 580, the 580 was more intuitive and seemed a bit easier to figure out.
The 430 is a good flash, and the fact that you can use it for a slave makes it a great starter flash. I bought this knowing full well that I'm eventually going to upgrade to a 580EX.
Gripe 1: Custom functions are not labeled. You need to have the manual on hand. If you go simply by the display on the 430EX, all it indicates is which number you're on, and whether it's set at 0 or 1. It doesn't actually tell you what Custom Function 3 is, other than "Custom Function 3".
Gripe 2: One of the custom functions for the 430 is for model lighting. For the run of the mill average joe, it would have been nice of Canon to include a definition of what exactly that means. I'm still looking.
