Description:

This speedlite is a highly featured E-TTL flashgun for macro photography on the EOS camera system.
On compatible SLRs like the EOS-1V and EOS-3 the MT-24EX can be used at shutter speeds faster than the camera's normal sync speed.
The twin flashes can be fired at even power, or varied across an eight-stop range for total control over illumination. A modeling flash provides a preview of the lighting effect. For easier focusing two lamps can be used to illuminate your subject before taking the photo.
You can also use the speedlite with other 550EX units for wireless auto flash photography.
Key Features

I've had my version of this flashgun for about 18 months now and have to say it gives excellent results.
I've not used a ringflash, but like the way you can angle the lights on this to get the lighting effect you want.
The flashgun has several settings, you can alter power output of the individual lamps, flash bracket, and set the speed to sync at higher speeds.
For me the ease of use is great, (I don't often use the features on the flash when in the field but it is good they are there when you need them) , as you can simply attach to your E-TTL camera ( I use a film EOS-3 and digital D10) and set the camera to manual / av mode and snap away letting the unit work out the light.
Really useful for the dedicated macro photographer as it allows you to shoot in high detail in low light conditions and freeze moving insects etc.
If you're only starting out in macro, then I'd not recommend an immediate rush to buy. Find out whether you're into macrophotography the cheap way ( extension tubes or cheap lens ) then add the right stuff once you're hooked.
