After extensive research i was able to narrow down my search for a digital camera to the 400D, the 30D and the Nikon D80. I ruled out the D80 due to the high noise reported in high ISO settings and the need for more expensive SD memory. When it came to the 30D althought being a cracking piece of kit, i could not justify the extra £300 for spot metering and lower resolution. I also much prefer all the picture settings being on a single display compaired with the dual display of the 30D.
I bought this body only and went for a Sigma 18-50mm f/2.8 lens (about £300), which works well, and doesn't look too out of place, despite non-matching brand names. The funtionality of this camera is amazing, and it leaves little to be desired, tho despite the vast range of features, you hardly need to use the manual at all, even if this is your first D-SLR (for me it is). Taking pitures with this is a pleasure, and always gives great results making the begginner look like a pro while at the same time giving the pro the ability to adjust just about everything. If your looking for your first D-SLR or are upgrading from an older entry level D-SLR i would definatly recomment this to you, you will not be dissapointed.

I paid 800 euro for a great camera,a 2GB memory card and a hard cover for the camera. In this price range it is unbeatable!Pictures are great, but it also depends on the lens that you use.The quality remains also at ISO 400,at ISO 800 acceptable and of course at ISO 1600 it is going down.It has nice functions and the cleaning system seems to do it's job so far(Canon implemented it also in the new 1 D Mark III).Great camera to start with!

I paid £539.00 for the 400D, canon 18 - 55mm kit lens, 1 gb CF card and a Loweprow bag ( cant remember the name)
having had this camera now for a few weeks, i think i can safely say that i would recommend it to ANYONE. having listened to many people i did have one or two reservations about it mainly on the size. until i went and saw it for myself.
it fits comfortably in my hands, doesnt weigh overly much and is solidly built.
the controls are intuitive and for anyone who has used a camera with a variety of controls then there shouldnt be much problem to this. And if all else fails there is an easy to understand ( if large) manual to back up and questions.
The lenses are a dream to fit , and are solid once in place. Quality wise obvious there is a difference dependant on the lens but even the kit lens ( 18 - 55mm) is a lovely lens although it has been much maligned!
The sensor cleaning is just a genius of an addition and for those like me who would be terrrified of cleaning their own sensor it gives a tremendous peice of mind!
The camera itself responds well and very quickly, i personally dont see the 3 fps RAW speed an issue but then i havent put it thru all its paces. but i cant forsee it being a major handicap. I can for people who predominantly shoot sports and wildlife tho.
All in all, a great easy all round camera and one that for me will last me for a good long time!

I actually got mine second hand for £300 in perfect (mint) condition inc 18-55mm lens, all manuals and accessories in wrappers and a 6 month gaurantee. If you're interested in retailer PM me for details.
The best deal I've seen so far for a brand new one for £400 (possible to get £45 cashabck from Canon also).
I bought this camera only 3 days ago and already have a good feel for it. I barely had to look at the manual as the layout and buttons are all very clear. The case is not particularly heavy, however even though it is a plastic case it does not feel flimsy or cheap. The kit lens for this is the Canon 18-55mm lens. The downside (apart from the lower lower optics) is it does not have Image Stabilisation and feels a bit plasticky. I'm not a long time user of DSLRs so can't comment on the overall quality of the lens, however i have taken over 1000 photos over the last week with this and it performs well!
Great starting out camera or a backup body. Highly recommended!
